The Kentucky Postgame Report

Sorry - but one day of a very shortened practice didn't prepare him anymore. He was clearly lost out there today when it came to defense and plays on offense - he could have done just as well versus a weaker front line thursday night.

as i said i dont think that you want to risk an injury if you feel like physically he may be putting himself in jeopardy. i still feel like he was fully capable of learning more about the team watching miss st, the plane back, the next days walk through, and the morning of the game. there is plenty of little things that ccm may have wanted him to know before he played and maybe he figured those out. as i also said, stokes didnt play in the last 5 minutes today because ccm didnt wanna risk a defensive breakdown, it would have been the same way the other night. he wouldnt have been on the floor in the last few minutes.

I didn't see Stokes lost on D any more than anyone else and don't remember specific lapses.

I think he was just not in there because it was his first game and CM wasn't comfortable.

there were 1 or 2 hedges on screens in particular i remember in which he went entirely too wide and allowed the ball handler to split in between and drive to the hoop. dykes even mentioned it a few times that defensively he seemed out of position a couple of times. this is completely to be expected though of the kid im not bashing in any way shape or form.

UT played a very good game. They came up short when they tried to match the playmaking ability of the Wildcats in the latter part of the second half. Go Vols!

as much as i hate to say it because i dont like to make excuses, but i think that dry spell we hit there late can be directly connected to the quick turnaround we had to make. thanks sec!

Risk injury? Are you being sarcastic? What is the difference in 1 day of practice that is a very light practice? Nothing.

He was also watching the team in street clothes before MSU - that wasn't his first game on the bench so...

Sorry but 1 practice didn't matter - Martin probably looks back and wishes he would have played him for atleast 5 minutes, maybe 10 after seeing him perform against a dominant front line of UK.

yea maybe he just wasnt 100% that he was physically ready. ccm had stated he wasnt going to play against uk initially, and even said after the game today he had eyed a date of after uconn but that he felt jarnell had proven enough and shown he was physically ready. you werent there you dont know what went on, they may have had a damn written test on play calls he was required to pass first before he could play, or a physical test he had to pass first. im not saying this is what it was but there is a reason ccm did what he did and i have no problem with it, i dont think if stokes plays against msu it makes a difference, he wouldnt have played the last 5 minutes in that game either.

you act like he is nursing some sort of injury. The guy is out of shape - so what? Brian Williams play 75% of his career here out of shape.

He's in better shape than Renardo Sidney.

and neither of those guys will ever get in better shape because neither one wants to they have had plenty of time. ccm knew that given a few days or weeks, he wasnt sure how long itd take, that he would be in peak condition and would feel comfortable putting him out there. the fact doesnt change that stokes clearly today was lost a few times on defense, and its probably improved in the previous 36 hours, so he probably would have been lost on more plays against msu. im going to trust ccm judgment and that he didnt think stokes was ready to play.

He was ready Thursday if he was ready today. Yeah - he got lost a few times on screens and not sure which guy he had - but he still helped a lot more than he hurt and could've been a positive against MSU.

ok and by your theory if he was ready against msu he was ready the week before that. and if he was ready that week he must have been ready the week before that. somewhere along the line he wasnt ready, he may or may not have been ready against msu thursday night but it obviously wasnt perfectly clear whether or not he was and ccm didnt want to take ANY chances.

another thought on this could be that with the unusually quick turnaround that they were facing he may have worried that playing stokes who may not be in top shape, would not be ready come today. if he had to choose im sure he wanted to have him today than on thursday.

quite honestly as i said neither you or i know what was really going on it could have been anything but the guy getting paid multi millions of dollars decided he wasnt ready and since he does this for a living im going to go with what he says instead of a fan on a message board.

Gotta agree with ZJC here. Cam came to play. He's not a great player, so greatness shouldn't be expected from him. If you're looking to single out individual performances as to why we came up short: McRae and Woolridge. 0-8 from the field. At least Woolridge brought some energy and hustle. McRae just looks shattered right now, compared to how well he was playing early in the season.

Here's a different way of looking at it: We took the #2 team in the country down to the wire with SKYLAR FREAKING MCBEE playing 25 minutes. I know there's no such thing as moral victories, and it's too late for Stokes to save this season, but next year, watch out, boys and girls.

I think its entirely possible that Stokes surprised CM with his productivity today. I am willing to bet that CM had no expectation that he would get that presence and stat line he got today.

The point is many times you don't know what you have in a player until you see him in live action especially if he has only practiced a few times. In all honesty I bet CM felt that Stokes would have been a detriment to the team on Thursday and that is the real reason he didn't play. Hind sight is always 20/20.

Also a very good point. I don't think anybody could have expected that debut.

Exactly. You have no idea how Stokes is going to perform.

What if Jarnell gets lost in his first game, let's the crowd noise affect him against Miss Stat, goes 0-4, gives up a couple buckets, and then he's lost some confidence on the road.

And then ccm is ripped for playing a guy too early and causing them to lose a game that it they hadn't played him they'd have won.

Exactly. You have no idea how a 18 year old kid is going to react. I'll go with CCM's judgement on this one.

He wasn't cleared to play before that - so no - by my theory that isn't even close.

Adding a potential NBA talent - no matter how young or inexperienced to our front court isn't really taking a big risk - I mean my god we're under .500 and we've only played 3 SEC games. It's not like we've got tons of SEC quality big men suited up.

I'm sure CCM is worried about fans ripping him in year one for a loss to MSU due to inserting a 5-star recruit - definitely. Can't imagine how worried he would be if his team were to lose to the Austin Peay's of the CBB world.

Stokes isn't going to let a bad first game determine his entire week, month, season, or career so that's just a cop out imo.

I'm thinking we should have pushed him to graduate as a junior so he'd have been here for Maui, we would have definitely won the invitational then!
