Legally, it’s possibly the most critical part of the trial. Most other appellate issues are cleansed by this kind of bizarre presumption that the jury followed their instructions.

Botch the jury instructions and that presumption goes away and it’s pretty much a guaranteed retrial. There is usually a lot of boilerplate in the instructions with sides arguing about changes to them.
