The Masters Tournament

Just now recovering from my Sunday Masters party.

Congrats to Bubba.

Geez, how many strokes did Harrington and Westwood leave on the course on Sunday ? from tee to green they were great, if either one could have putted a lick they'd be the owner of a green jacket.

I finally just looked it up. He's 42nd on tour in Driving distance . . . but he was 2nd in Driving distance at the Masters mostly due to his performance on Sunday when he averaged 308 yards.

Check out the disparity in how far he was hitting it the first 3 rounds and what he did on Sunday.

He actually averaged further than Bubba on Sunday . . . which is kind of funny because if you saw the last few drives Bubba hit, it was apparent he was 20 yards longer Oosthuizen when he wanted to be.

I was just stating he wasn't a short knocker & hitting a 4 iron 200+ yards downhill without doing anything special would be easy for him.

I would disagree. Louis hit it 240 to the front of the green and got really, really lucky. Bubba was in a playoff for the Masters, and had to hit a near impossible shot just to stay in contention. I would say that Bubba's shot was the better of the two, but that's my opinion.

Bubba's shot could be pulled off exponentially more often than Oosthuizen's. IMO, Bubba's shot wasn't anything close to impossible

But required much more skill then hitting a ball 200 to the front of the green.

The target Louis had to hit that 4 iron to get it close was smaller than you would think. The shot Bubba hit was clutch considering the situation but he's likely to hit the same shot from the middle of the fairway.

The average is only two tee shots on predetermined holes.

It takes as much or more skill to hit a 4 iron on a frozen rope as it does to hit a duck hook from out of the trees. There are A LOT more people that can hit a duck hook than those that can rip a 200 yard4 iron dead solid perfect.

I'd disagree but we all have our opinions

First point - hitting a duck hook with a PW is a lot harder than with a 5 iron.

Second point - being able to control the amount of hook (e.g. 40 yards vs 20 yards) is also more difficult for most.

Can I hook the ball when I want? Sure. But I can't always control the degree of "bend".

Not for me :) I can hit straight much better than I can an intentional hard curve.

Bubba curves virtually every shot with every club & it's not just a couple yards.

Even more amazing is the fact he does it with modern technology, which has been specifically designed to eliminate curves. It's even more difficult to curve with the blades they are making today vs 20 years ago

Agreed to disagree.

the curving issue is really about the ball and not the irons.

Me either I would definitely be able to hit my 4 iron 200 dead straight from the fairway, before I could hit a intentional hook to the exact distance off of pine needles.

For anyone who may not have noticed, go back and watch the follow through on Bubba's wedge shot. His left hand (right hand for most of us) is so far over the top it's ridiculous. He turned that club over big time to create that much hook.

Question: If you hit both of those spectacular shots in the same round, which shot would you be more likely to brag about to your peers?

Surely you're joking. One ball went in for a double eagle. The other, onto the green and a two putt par.

In reality though, neither one of them

I look at it this way is a half court shot at the buzzer of the first quarter a better shot than a contested jumper to win the game?

Both were trying to get on the green for a good putt. Oosty had a better lie and straight shot but it was a long distance. He nailed it. Bubba had a bad lie and the need to majorly curve the ball but it was shorter distance. Oosty's was on his second hole of the round, Bubba's was on the second hole of the playoff to win the Masters.

Bubba's was more clutch and thus I rate it as the "better" shot.

Bubba had an awesome lie in the pine needles. A 150 yard shot that wasn't terribly difficult to hit the green doesn't trump a 250 yard alby.
