The Meltdown That Is Happening At CatsPause

same one that the kids in Oklahoma had....just being stupid

So in the UK handbook it says a student can be expelled for "just being stupid"?

Might want to just go ahead and lock yourself up for the night Otis

I am 56 years old, I know exactly what the phrase means and Harrison should be kicked out of school

And what if a nba player said this? A fine? Maybe just called trash talk? At worst Harrison should get punished internally at the start of next season (if he comes back).

That won't happen either. The story's already done. No suspension, no disciplinary action, not really any criticism to speak of in the media, no consequence whatsoever. And the fact that so many are so quick to dismiss this just tells you how f'ed up our society is to this. The hypocrisy is amazing. Again, if Kaminsky had said something similarly derogatory about Harrison, all hell from every corner of the country would've descended on him. To say otherwise is at best naieve, at worst intellectually dishonest.

Do you truly not see the difference if kaminsky had said the same thing?

Why does your view on the incident revolve around the media's response? Is that so important to you that he be called out?

What did the Oklahoma kids do to get kicked out of school? Used racially insensitive language, stupid words. Harrison used the same stupid language.....Hate speech....stupid speech to defend it

It's sad you can't see the difference. What Harrison said was not hate speech. What was said by the OU students was hate speech. Whether they should have been expelled makes no difference to me

Plenty of people have criticized him. You just aren't paying attention or are too fixated in demanding the ounce of flesh from Harrison that no one has delivered to your satisfaction. Every single news outlet of note covering the tournament has put out a story on this, often critical of Harrison. However, most have also the common sense to use context within the situation to realize the manner in which it was said.

why is that sad you think the kid should be able to say what ever he wants without consequence....it is a double standard

Pretty sure most people should be able to say what they want to as long as they are willing to deal with the aftermath.

No it's not. A bunch of white guys chanting about lynching a black man will always be seen as more serious than what Harrison said. If you were not aware of this then you need to get out more

There's a difference in a group of white students chanting against a whole race compared to a black guy saying three words about a white player he had just played against.

No what's sad is one side can pick and choose when and who uses the word and its acceptable but in other cases it's off limits. If it's insensitive and offensive when my white ass says it to Harrison then Harrison shouldn't use it to refer to Cauley-Stein or any other black person.

I worked for a black woman at an overwhelmingly black recreation center. She got so tired of hearing the kids calling each other n***as that she set them one day and told them a n***a is an uneducated, ignorant bum (her own definition to get the point across). She said I couldn't call them that so why should they call each other that? And that who wants to be associated with the definition she applied? I think it's a line of thinking that a lot of society needs to adhere to.

No one is saying you can't use the word as you see fit. Just don't be surprised when the reaction is much different.

So does black coworker now trump the black friend?

Tough crap. As I said, white society forfeited their role in this discussion long ago as to acceptable use of this word and being able to dictate to black people what is and isn't appropriate in regards to saying it.

Sticks and stones folks, sticks and stones. Young Mr Harrison chose some ugly words at an inopportune moment. Big deal. He called kaminsky and apologized. The only ones making it a story - are the ones that want to make it a story. People are too soft.

Youre up in the draft. We may actually finish this year!

Indeed. The black kid plays for a team that millions root for so he can say anything and it will be rationalized, defended, laughed off, etc.

was this the most talented team to not win the championship? Drexler/olayjuwan or another uk team under calipari maybe?

91 unlv imo

Did they have 7 guys enter the NBA draft that year? I might be wrong but that must be some kind of record especially since there are 4 more future NBA players on the this roster. I mean really, how do you lose?

They had 3 first rounders drafted off the team and a 2nd rounder drafted the next year. From an NBA standpoint I agree. The talent difference between UNLV and everyone else was a wider gap IMO then this years Kentucky team. Plus they were all experienced

Why? Let's be blunt because we are all adults here, yes? its about slavery, right? One problem America doesn't teach, there were immensely more white slaves throughout human history. The term comes from Slavic people because they were one of the first to be owned and used in the manner.

We don't see them calling names of anyone. You want equality in anything, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. then you treat them all the same.

If you can't see that equality not only means getting the same opportunities, but the same punishments, then the problem isn't with the descendants of oppressors who have nothing to do with the problem, but the descendants of the oppressed.

I have a cousin who is a fairly high functioning autistic man, but its enough you can tell just looking at him that he has problems. He refuses to park in handicapped spots, refuses to take "advantage" of his situation or let others do the same. Why? Because he claims that, if a race or people demands another treat them better or differently to feel equal, then they are admitting to being lesser than those they ask for the treatment from and he refuses to claim he is less than anyone.

Do we still have race problems in the world? Yes. We will never be rid of them until the day far off in human history (assuming we make it that far) where there is a unified race in the world, and when that day comes we'll have something new to single people out for. But here, in this moment, events and behaviors like this are things we as a species have control over. To have one person able to say something with little or no ramifications and another face severe consequences for the same thing doesn't put blacks, whites, or any other race behind in the years, it puts us behind as a society.

You want to make society better? Start small, with actions like this, and treat him the same as anyone of a different race would be treated if this was said. But we won't, because we're scared of real societal change since it will be hard, and in this day and age it seems even parents of Millenials and Gen X are terrified of doing things that are actually hard anymore.

There is nothing more I have to say on this subject, have fun bickering over how long we stay in the early and mid 20th century.
