The Numbers Thread

I found this:

As it currently stands with the NCAA, when a walk-on is rewarded with a scholarship, it counts against the general 85 scholarships the football program is allowed. However, if a walk-on player is given the same benefit within their first two years, it not only counts against the general 85 scholarships, but against the 25 scholarships allowed for the following season’s recruiting class.

With Swafford now on scholarship going into his 2nd year, it looks like he would count toward the 85 plus against the 2015 class making the #24.

I thought Swafford was going on scholarship next semester.

So if EB14 had paid for his brothers, he would have covered Evans's scholarship and not Elliott's?

I believe he was taking a shot at Nationdom over a thread Nationdom started that basically said our current class was horrible and all CBJ can recruit is 3 stars.

Haha far from the truth. Far from the point of that thread.

Then wouldn't he have to count against the 2014 class?

I'm not sure where the cut off is for the 2014 class and the start of the 2015 class. I have just been counting Swafford toward 2015 as Rivals and other services have reported as such. Looking at the numbers for 2014 and how they played out, 25 for the class and back counting 7 equaled the 32 UT took. I don't think they could count Swafford for 2014.

My point is that, at least in my mind, he either counts towards 2014 or he doesn't count at all since 2015 would be outside the 2 years you would count a walkon that goes on scholarship. Thats why I was thinking he didn't go in scholarship until next spring (could be wrong about that since I can't find anything online saying when exactly he went/goes on scholarship)

Callahan thinks the number is 25.

I heard this on Swain too from Callahan - makes sense.

Callahan had a great point on the Swain Event: these classes are very much a work in progress. This time last summer we had 9-10 commits that didn't end up being a part of the final class.

My guess is that we add Tuttle, Richmond, and a few others to get the number up to 26-28 and then Butch will chisel that down to 25 with some kids leaving due to academic and/or playing time concerns.

I can confirm that Swafford unfortunately counts for the 2015 class

With the kid playing as well as he is being a walk-on last year, IMO there is nothing unfortunate about it. Kid is a playmaker. Pick 6 vs UF, returned the blocked punt for a TD vs UGA. CBJ giving him a scholarship IMO was a great move. Show kids that playing well will be rewarded.

"Unfortunate" was referring to the fact that his scholarship would count towards this year's class...but since you brought it up, I'm gonna reserve judgement on his playmaking abilities. His big plays were a result of him being out of position. He was in the wrong place at the right time.

While I am not a football scheme technician, he looks to be in pretty good position on this one.

Also here I'm not sure where he was supposed to be, but looks right to me as he is headed to the end zone.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a reference to the rule that states this? The way I understand it by taking a walk-on year, he only counts against the 85 not any class of 25.

It has to count towards a class. In Swafford's case, since we maxed out our 2014 class we have no choice but to count it towards 2015. This link may help explain

Rewarding a walk-on: Inside the mind of a head coach

The scholarships have to either count backward (if you still have room) or forward if the walk-on is in his first two seasons with the program."

I too don't purport to be a technician, but Ainge has stated Swaffords responsibility was the gunner who would've lit up the punt returner had it not been blocked.
