The Numbers Thread

He may have been, IDK. Was he one of those "spring scholarship" guys who gets put back on walk on status when the incoming class shows up in the fall? It gets confusing sometimes.

Could be. I know anytime a walk-on goes on scholarship it's always up in the air how long he actually keeps it. If one is available a walk-on can get it, if it's needed elsewhere, they are back paying their own way.

The attrition last year was a little easier than I think this years will be. Just due to more and more guys are CBJ'S recruits.

Yeah, I'd imagine it's a lot tougher to just boot kids who you have looked in the eye and called them family.

Not just that but I presume Butch has brought in kids that are of high character and you'd presume have bought into his scheme and are doing what is asked. So I would think you'd see less guys doing the wrong thing or disillusioned etc. I'm sure you have some in every class though but 10-11, whew.

They should Institute a scholarship drop deadline. A time by which schools have to notify the player. Then allow those guys to be eligible to go anywhere in any conference by some other deadline like say NSD. Basically allow them to become free agents. Some team would love Alabama's 4* medical redshirt guy that didn't play much.

I know they kind of can now but just make it more official and structured. We could have really used some linemen last year by way of a process like that. Kind of like JuCo but not.

I'd like to see all scholarships go to 4 years. 5 years if the coaches have a kid RS. IMO all it does is force the coaches to be more selective, character comes into play a lot more, and missing on players/taking risks with players will have an impact. Coaches could not just drop a bunch of guys to make room for a bunch of new guys. Coaching, development, and building a team into something would actually happen more often than just processing a roster and the weird infatuation with starting over all the time with new players.

80 players currently on scholarship.

11 SRs who will be leaving and spots opened up which brings the # to 69.

Rumors that RDAIV will be transferring to UT adds 1 making it possibly 70.

26 current commitments.

96 kids possibly on scholarship with a max of 85 allowed.

Who is RDAIV?

See I think by making it not allowed or less official it makes it harder on the players and sneakier with the coaches and schools. You'd see more pressure to go the medical route. Kids already do and would also continue to get processed for random violations that likely other players might not and just booted from school. I say make it more transparent so you know what each schools is doing and how many they are doing it to. That allows parents and recruits to weigh that when picking a school. Schools can show their track record of placing kids in better fitting situations too so that it is not all negative. Then basically let them redo their recruitment just in a more concentrated time frame.

Man it sure would not look good if Tennessee tried to point to how attrition has went the last couple/three years. I believe UT is about to have had maybe 25 or so kids leave/be processed out of the program in just 2 years. I know the fans call it "flipping the roster", but obviously a recruit/his family should see it as a concern. If it's so easy to just send kids packing, will I be next on that list if I picked UT?

I can see that it looks like that but when a new coach takes over, there is usually turnover in a program. a coach recruits a player that will fit in his system and a player that is recruited by that coach may work out or may not. there is nothing guaranteed to that player when he signs a loi. we have players right now that will and are probably being recruited over right now. winning is the business of the coach. when a player is let go, it's nothing personal.

what is the mindset of the player...???

That would likely be true but it could have been explainable to the new recruits. You'd hope as Butch gets his kids in here it happens less and less.
Also on the flip side what I suggested might have gotten those 25 kids in more advantagous situations.

Maybe when recruits make their live commitment announcements at their HS they should change it a little. Instead of saying, "I will be spending the next 4 years at such and such university". They should say something like, "I hope to get at least 2 years on campus at (insert school here) before the fans ask for me to be dropped to make room for the next unknown guy coming in". :)

I think the fans need to realize all the turnover WILL NOT get UT back to winning IMO. Why are schools like Miss St, Ole Miss, and others winning now? The 3-4* kids on those rosters have been developed and kept around long enough for them to progress and succeed on the field. Did Mullen or Freeze all a sudden become great coaches? IMO not really. They just developed the guys they had and started winning ball games. You keep dropping the JRs and SRs to make room because you're enamored with the new guys you might get coming in and all you're going to do is continue losing to teams who took the time to develop their older players rather than booting them.

are you talking about every team in the ncaa or just UT.?Because, you do know it's like this everywhere.?

What you discuss is why I say if you make it transparent it would foster more stability.

I get that the fans who don't mind seeing kids processed claim it goes on at every school. What I have seen is that is just not the case, especially to the degree UT has been doing it. You will note the same people saying to drop as many as you need to so you can take a full class today are the same ones who said it last year, the year before, and will do it every year going forward. They have zero sense of integrity and no feelings at all for the kids who wear the UT Orange unless it's an absolute superstar. They will celebrate his commitment today and scream for him to be dropped 12 months from now always claiming it's what is best for UT. They also like to use the reasoning that because UT is young, losing should be expected at this point. Needless to say if you keep calling for players to be dropped, the team will always be young. Maybe they like the built in excuse for losing.

When I looked to see how many schools in recent year have taken LESS than the allowed max for each class, I noticed it happens ALOT. Folks claiming that every school drops what they need to every year so they can sign a full class is just telling stories. It's just not true at all. Even in the SEC you would note a lot of classes the last 2-3 years where 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 was the total. Not the 25 or more max UT fans seem think "all schools do it". No, they really don't.

A new thought:

With the recent surge in development of our current OL, the current class we have recruited (Stewart, an OG, and Jones, Hall, and Bowlware, all OT), and our redshirts on the current squad (Raulerson and Blair, both OT and Mosley, probably an OG/RT), do we NEED another OL this class? Would love to get Richmond or Burrell, but are Allen, Sweet, or McGirt really needed?

I know this sounds ridiculous, but think about it. We will on the roster next year:

Blair and Kendrick at LT. Both will be ready.
Jackson, Kerbyson, Sanders (maybe OT), Robertson, Stewart, Mosley (probably) at Guard.
Crowder, Weisman, and Thomas (also OT) at C.
Sanders, Thomas, Raulerson, Jones, Boulware, Hall at the remaining Tackle spots, wherever they might shake out.

That is 14 scholarship OL. Seems like we could possibly role with that for another season with the possibility to redshirt some, if not all, of our current 2015 recruits, unless we land Richmond or Burrell, and possibly the 2014 guys who didn't get to redshirt this year (Thomas and Robertson).

I am just beginning to think that if we can use these scholarships somewhere else, maybe we should. Hopefully this current OL continues to develop like they have the past two weeks and I won't look stupid for saying this in four weeks.

I love analysis like this. Good post.
