The Numbers Thread

I appreciate that. I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

Good post and very reasonable. I do think you missed Austin Sanders, but we definitely have bodies on the OL IF the staff can develop them. As the days go by I am thinking that the (4) OL guys currently committed will be it for 2015. IMO that will be alright going forward. I think we lose 2 to graduation and add 4. Just have to develop what they have.

Fixed my post. Added Austin.

Was/is the OL problem just the scheme? I think this offense is destined to fail with a non mobile QB. Maybe the OL wasn't as bad as we thought. I know USC's defense sucks but I was very impressed.

I think we want flexibility in every dimension of our offense. Because JW isn't a mobile guy, it was not allowing our OL to function well in the scheme it was being coached for. Just my opinion. I am not a coach.

I agree. I remember when CBJ was hired he said the coaches would adjust the offense to fit their players. I did not see them able to do that especially with the OL. The OL could not stop anyone when Worley was in there. There were free rushers coming from every direction. Now that Dobbs is at QB it's like a light has flipped on for the OL. I bet Justin wishes he saw that kind of protection 3-4 games ago. Maybe it's tied to the scheme/protections, but obviously something is very different than just a couple games ago.

Regardless it's a very entertaining offense when all cylinders are firing.

This has been a very interesting thread. Good, logical, thoughtful input by all concerned. The OL summary was helpful, but I still think we need at least one additional OL in the 2015 class, preferably an OT. I know Kahil is still working Richmond, but I think McGirt and Sweet are the realistic options for OT. But I also agree that we may have waited too long to go after these two. We'll see.

QB-Jennings, Dormady
RB-Reid, Kamara
APB/Slot-Perry, Bruce
WR-Williams
TE-Oliver
OL-Stewart, Jones, Hall, Boulware
DT-McKenzie, Picou, Tuttle
DE-Butcher, Jackson, Ford, Taylor
LB-Cherry, Smith
S-Griffin
CB-Abernathy, Miller
P-Townsend
LS-Lovingood

If any changes were made, I'd say maybe another OL guy or another LB. Otherwise looks like a good class and covers the needs very well.

You been keeping an eye on the Van Jefferson thread? Sounds to me like we've got a legitimate shot at picking up another WR (Ryan Newsome a possibility at that position as well)

Was about to bring this up as well. If what is being said is true (I'm a firm believer) then Van to UT is a very real possibility.

I think we will see anywhere from 4-6 new names on that list. Just based on the law of averages there have to be a few current commits that drop off and change, plus I feel we will sign 27/28.

There is always a lot of talks of possible flips. Especially after a win. We'll see what plays out. IF the staff plans to keep Williams, Perry, and Bruce, I doubt they add a 4th WR. JMO

My confidence has less to do with the fact that we won and more in the fact that de1conley says that Van is not impressed with Georgia's offense and QB situation moving forward.

I hope Martin is on that list.

It's possible that it is too late for Van at this point. Adds most likely centered on RB, OL, and/or LB.

This probably isn't worth a new thread, at least not yet, but this was from a clip on ESPN and I thought it might be interesting given all the discussion about OL targets.

I know it doesn't seem like we had great luck last year with Blair, but if there is room and the potential is there this may be a name that we see pop up at some point in the future.

When coaches search for talent in the junior college ranks, you will often find them on the hunt for offensive linemen. So it’s no surprise to see a player like Butler (Kansas) Community College offensive tackle Tyler Howell become one of the hottest targets in the country. Howell, who is from Bonner Springs, Kansas, is scheduled to visit Arkansas on Nov. 14 and Ohio State on Nov. 29, and he just picked up an offer from Penn State on Wednesday. "He’s the hottest player we have with college coaches," Butler’s recruiting coordinator Dale Vogel said. "Penn State doesn’t recruit juco players a lot, but they loved his film. He talked to their coaches earlier this week. He’s been great for us the last few weeks." Howell also has offers from Arizona State, Colorado State, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Missouri, NC State and North Texas.

I've been mentioning this kid for months. IMO he would be the best Juco kid to go after OL wise. Looking at how things have played out, I don't think the staff seems interested at all in Juco's this year on the OL.

QB - Jennings, Dormady
RB - Kamara, Reid
WR - Williams, Jefferson, Bruce
TE - Oliver
OL - Jones, Stewart, Boulware, Hall
DE - Butcher, Phillips, Taylor, Jackson
DT - Mckenzie, Tuttle, Picou
LB - Cherry, Smith
CB - Abernathy, Martin, Amadi
S - Griffin
ATH - Perry
P - Townsend
LS - Lovingood

My opinion as of now. I think there may be a greyshirt option on a particular recruit, and I believe we strengthen certain positions with instate guys we currently don't have.

JimmyHyams: Mon 03:05pm Asked how many recruits he will sign for 2015, UT coach Butch Jones: `We will recruit a full class.' He said it could be 33, 32 or 25.

sounds good to me. Butch brings in as many as he wants apparently and I'm totally fine with that.

He said the same thing last season, but many of the kids he was talking about were walk on players.

I'm assuming Ralph David Abernathy's addition is taking a scholarship although I see he gets his degree from Cincinnati next month. Maybe he can get an academic scholarship into the grad school and not take one from the 85? Which begs the question is there any precedent for moving a player with exceptional academic achievement (ie Dobbs) from a football scholarship to an academic one?

Ralph David will be on football scholarship.

And to answer your question, no. That whole flipping of scholarships to academic or other sports was a big thing decades ago but has since been made where it's much much harder to do (I think that a player would have to start out on academic scholarship or another scholarship and then walkon while continuing excellence in academics/another sport). Even then if the player excels at football coaches will give him a deserved scholarship in most cases.

Think it's called the Bear Bryant rule if I'm not mistaken..

This has come up before in regards to basketball vs. football scholarships. I believe the consensus is that if you play football and are on scholarship, it has to be a football scholarship. I would assume this applies to academic scholarships as well.
