The Numbers Thread

Ralph David will be on football scholarship.

And to answer your question, no. That whole flipping of scholarships to academic or other sports was a big thing decades ago but has since been made where it's much much harder to do (I think that a player would have to start out on academic scholarship or another scholarship and then walkon while continuing excellence in academics/another sport). Even then if the player excels at football coaches will give him a deserved scholarship in most cases.

Think it's called the Bear Bryant rule if I'm not mistaken..

Abernathy might have been a package deal with his brother, but I'm skeptical about taking a scholarship next year that would've otherwise been given to a freshmen at a position in more greater need than RB.

I'm not saying a player like Dobbs wouldn't be deserved of a football scholarship. The flexibility that a walkon academic scholarship recipient would provide be a huge benefit.

I think it just means the staff will have to drop another current player from the roster to make room for RDAIV. Looks like they plan to take a full class, so any sort of transfer just adds another to the list of 8-12 current VFL's who will be dropped/processed.

80 currently on scholarship. 11 SRs leaving the program has the roster at 69. RDAIV coming in makes 70. 26 current commitments means 96 possibly on scholarship. Something drastic has to happen to get back to 85 and avoid penalties.

Qb, wr, RB, db, lb, and DL are all positions that could see transfers. I think we will be fine.

but, but, we should keep those players. as long as they're not getting in trouble they should have a place on this team. even though they will never sniff playing time.

A lot of players that don't make major impacts as TFR or SO can and do turn into great players as they get more work and time in the program. Lots of fans on this very board was ready to drop Josh Smith after his TFR year. Now he is one of the better WR options we have when healthy. Having JRs and SRs on your team is not a bad thing. Ole Miss and MSU are good programs to look to. Not a lot of *'s JR and SR wise, yet those older guys contribute to stability and building a quality winner. Anytime you are losing double digit kids off your roster year after year, it can't be viewed as a good thing. New coaching staff or not.

I don't know of anybody with a little sense, that was wanting josh smith gone. we have people that overreact.

having jrs or snrs is a good thing. but, if they are just taking up room on the bench or a special teams player that's not getting meaningful snaps in a game, they should look elsewhere for playing time.

the way BJ is recruiting, we will make up that double digit loss.

A lot of FR, SO, and RSJRs are taking up spots on a lot of benches around the country. Building a championship caliber team requires guys getting time to develop. At some point the concept of dropping anyone who is not starting has to stop or you will just continue being very young and losing a lot of games. It does not matter how CBJ is recruiting as the same fans calling for guys on the bench to be dropped to make room for unknowns today, will be saying the same things a year or 2 from now with the guys CBJ is taking right now. To clear 8-12 spots to sign this class, CBJ will be cutting loose kids that he has signed. IMO I'd take my chances with developing some of these guys that other fans want to use to "make some room".

I think guys have been given every opportunity to get playing time and to step up their play. the reason I know this, we have some players still on the field that would not be out there if we had a better option or, if they hadn't picked up their own play.

I would absolutely take a chance on an unknown if what you see every day is inferior to what you could bring in....

Agreed. Moderate to heavy roster turnover is understandable and somewhat expected during the first couple seasons with a new staff. Things should really settle down after this season IMO. If not, we definitely have some other concerns...

As of now there would be 16 scholarship SRs headed into the 2015 season. Long way to go to even get to 25, but here would be a TN instate heavy UT 2016 class.

Drae Bowles is graduating in Dec and transferring for his last two years. He's already worked it out with CBJ. SIAP.

Geraldo Orta also opens up a spot. He was honored on senior night so it looks like he is done too.

80 on the roster. 11 SRs leaving would make the #69. Take 2 away for Bowles and Orta and you are at 67. Add 1 for RDAIV and that makes it 68.

Add in the commitments(26) thus far and you have up to 94 on scholarship with only 85 allowed. Still have to come up with at least 9 more spots before Aug 2015 and that is if they sign 26.

Will be interesting.

The WR position appears to have a few more spots. It's honestly not that hard to find 9 non contributors.

If we sign another large class this year by trimming a few players from our roster, which I feel some of these will be Junior scholarship athletes. What is this going to do to our 2016 class? It appears that this will be a very small class, as there are only a few Juniors on the roster.

It was posted in another thread, but theres a stat showing 20-30% SEC commits never make it past 2 years.

Nigel Warrior is from the Atlanta area.

Good list though

I have 80 with 13 seniors leaving. If as we discussed Carter has reverted back to WO status, that makes 79 with 12 seniors. Still need plenty of spots to open up, but it looks more like 6 or 7.

Yeah I actually tally 79 scholarship players w/ 14 set to graduate (including Carter and Orta)....others being Coleman, Jones, Williams, Darr, Johnson, Pair, Gilliam, Worley, Lane, Young, Down, and Quinn. That puts you at 65. There are 3 more players not currently around the program that could very easily not be on the roster coming out of this season, that puts you at 62 and all of a sudden you are very close to making numbers work.

I am also counting Swafford and Jo. Johnson as scholarship players. I'm not sure how fluid their scholly situations are being a former walk-on and JUCO transfer respectively, but if the staff has flexibility here going into next year they are that much closer to making it work.

It will all pan out :hi:
