The Numbers Thread

I've updated my scholarship roster after the recent departures. I posted in another thread, but it seems more appropriate here. After the recent departures I have the roster at 61 scholarship players returning for next year. Also the Abernathy kid from Cinci will I presume be on scholarship, and if Paulk returns as some have said it would put us at 63 Here is a breakdown by position.
QB: Dobbs, Peterman
RB: Hurd
WR: Howard, Pearson, Johnson, Blanc, North, Bowles, Croom, Smith, Malone, Wharton, Jenkins
TE: Wolf, Branisel, Creamer
OL: Crowder, Jackson, Blair, Weisman, Kerbyson, Sanders, Raulerson, Robertson, Kendrick, Thomas, Mosley
DE: Maggitt, Vereen, Barnett, Miller, Lewis, Vickers
DT: O Williams, Saulsberry, O'Brien, Mixon, Sawyers
LB: Weathered, JRM, King, Bynum, Bates, Bryant, McDowell, El Berry, J Johnson
CB: Foreman, Sutton, Moesley, Payne, Orta
S: McNeil, Randolph, Kelly, Gaulden, Ev Berry, L Johnson
K: Medley, Bullock
Thanks for posting. :hi:

Surprised Bowles is still here.

If we sign a "full complement" as coach has stated, then I would assume we will lose anywhere from 2-4 of those you list in your 63. Would that be a fair assessment?

The number everyone in the RF is saying is 28,which would put us at 91. Everyone feels that Bowles, Peterman, and Orta will be gone which would take it to 88. Would have to lose 3-4 more after that.

Bowles, Peterman and Orta all graduated. I think Peterman is the only one still in question-- guess it depends on if he wants to grind another year and whether the coaches are encouraging him to stay. All three are probably on the roster through the bowl game.

If Peterman graduated and was considering not coming back, recruiting a 3rd QB this year would make sense. Could this be why we are recruiting Jones?

I really like all the kids in this class right now and would hate to lose any of them at this point. If we take Phillips, amadi, 1 OL, and a QB (least likely IMO) that would put us at 30. Plus there is the DE Walker, LB Sapp and Martin at CB. I guess it's not worth worrying about but either way this class is going to be LOADED with talent and a few instant impact type guys. I love this time of year again! Thanks Butch

Pretty much how I'm feeling now. Some will worry about numbers or dropping people, but I have full faith in this staff to recruit and close with an elite class. That's all that matters

This next month until NSD will be very interesting. Can't wait to see how they make it all work. This is going to be a terrific class.

I believe this. If a player is working hard in practice and doing well academically, the university should continue to honor his scholarship until he graduates. There's no "free agency" in college football for discarded players and these are still just kids at the end of the day. They deserve to be treated fairly. Involuntary "attrition" undermines the sense of familial VFL loyalty that Coach Jones is trying to instill, and will negatively affect recruiting if it happens too often.

I agree with you in principle. Look at it this way though... Butch has a high pressure job he gets paid 3.6 mil to perform at a high level. Involved in that is what could be one of the most comprehensive, demanding rebuilding jobs in recent college football history. That is his assignment, and I think it's pretty clear that's what Hart hired him to do for the football program and school as a whole. The faster that rebuild, the quicker the school gets more football money and can do more school things.

To benefit the school as a whole sooner than later, Butch can't afford scholarships that don't produce results for the team, program, and school. That would dramatically increase the rebuild to have 10% of a roster you know won't contribute. Bending over backwards to "honor their scholarships" ends up potentially costing lots of benefits to thousands of students in the long run.

Yep. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made to the greater good. It's difficult to keep things in perspective when dealing with good kids that just aren't cut out to contribute at this level of play. But ultimately the success of the program is what pays the bills and the program must be maintained at a professional level. With that being said, I don't think Butch would just drop a hard working good natured kid without setting them up on a path to success, even if that success is not found on the football field at the University of Tennessee. GBO!

It's beginning to feel like this class isn't going to close with the boom that I had expected. It sucks a little, but it's a part of the process I guess.

We close with Pat Allen, it's a boom. Phillips or Walker or Martin added with him it's a nuclear blast.

Allen and another OT would be great. I have been a sunshine pumper as long as I can about Phillips, Amadi, Martin, and Walker. I think they are all officially long shots at this point, but I'd love to have them all. Especially the DBs. With Payne transferring now and CB already a position of need, we really need to get ATLEAST on of them, if not both. But, I don't see.

Phillips and Amadi are both a coin flip. It literally can go either way IMO on both of those. Martin is in the same boat IMO. That recruitment might actually favor UT more IMO. We may well lose all three but it's too early to concede IMO right now. IDK that anyone knows where Phillips ends up right now, even Phillips. I figure we see the Malone treatment get thrown out on Phillips and let the cards fall where they may at the end of it.

Walker will end up at AU IMO. He visits there late in the cycle and they never lose someone that vi$its late in the recruiting cycle.

OK, back to the numbers question. If UT somehow gets Jones, St Louis, and Phillips... how do they make room?
