The Numbers Thread

We haven't lost out on anybody we really wanted lately... have we? Even if Ugo decommits again, I don't see him as a take now. If we take 28-30, like many predict, the coaches can make it work.

I think the staff will push hard to get both Allen and St. Louis. We need 6 OL for depth and competition. Phillips is looking more optimistic at this point. Martin is still a possibility. We need both 3 QBs and 3 RBs. Like has been said, I just don't know how they will make the numbers work. 28 seems to be the number most mentioned at this point. It is going to be an interesting 34 days. Given how our commitments and targets are performing at the all-star practices, this class is going to be great.

That was the thrust of my question. How many can they back count and why?

Last time I saw anyone credible post on this, the Vols were only going to be able to sign 26.

I've updated my scholarship roster after the recent departures. I posted in another thread, but it seems more appropriate here. After the recent departures I have the roster at 61 scholarship players returning for next year. Also the Abernathy kid from Cinci will I presume be on scholarship, and if Paulk returns as some have said it would put us at 63 Here is a breakdown by position.
QB: Dobbs, Peterman
RB: Hurd
WR: Howard, Pearson, Johnson, Blanc, North, Bowles, Croom, Smith, Malone, Wharton, Jenkins
TE: Wolf, Branisel, Creamer
OL: Crowder, Jackson, Blair, Weisman, Kerbyson, Sanders, Raulerson, Robertson, Kendrick, Thomas, Mosley
DE: Maggitt, Vereen, Barnett, Miller, Lewis, Vickers
DT: O Williams, Saulsberry, O'Brien, Mixon, Sawyers
LB: Weathered, JRM, King, Bynum, Bates, Bryant, McDowell, El Berry, J Johnson
CB: Foreman, Sutton, Moesley, Payne, Orta
S: McNeil, Randolph, Kelly, Gaulden, Ev Berry, L Johnson
K: Medley, Bullock

If you take the list above at 63 and subtract 6 (Paulk, Bowles, Payne, Miller, Peterman, Orta) then you get 57. So we could sign 28 and stay at 85. JUCOs don't count against the 25, so Martin is in. That would leave 2 that need to be backcounted if we are to get to 85. If we can't backcount those two, then only sign 26 and bring back 2 of Orta, Paulk, and Peterson.

The 85 limit is no longer an issue as there are several more rumored transfers/early graduations. I'm still confused how we are able to take 28 if we don't have any backcount spots. I trust that CBJ and co know what they're doing.

Someone earlier said Jucos don't count. I can't say I've heard that before.

That was me, but upon further review that ruling has been reversed! JUCOs count against the 25 same as everybody else.

If we still take

Sapp
Love
Allen
Newsome
Jones

that's 31. Something gotta give.

Curious if players that weren't EE's from the previous class leave if that opens up a spot to backcount to?

No. I have no idea how Jones gets more than 25 scholarship players signed to LOIs this year...........but I'm sure there is a plan.

I edited my post, I was wondering who do you think we take (or your opinion of who to take) of recruits visiting us still. Iirc Love and Horton are two I could remember that are visiting this week.

How many can we take? How many do we have? How do you experts see it playing out? I don't have a clue without asking a few to look around......

but check my stats...what do I know.

After Sapp we are at 29 with a good possibility that we take Patrick and one of the OT's. According to LWS we can only take 24, meaning several will have to GS/BS. Anybody keeping up with who falls into that category?

If Cam indeed said UL and AU lead, IMO he won't be part of UTs 2015 class. If he is a 2016 guy, IMO he will be a Vol.

Stewart, Bruce, Lovingood, Perry, and Oliver all would qualify for blue shirt I believe. There is some doubt on Bruce though if his last visit was an official. And I'm not claiming all of those do blue shirt just saying I believe those five qualify for it.
