The Numbers Thread

Fort said on VQ that expect some defections from the current class and some transfers. Didn't refer to anyone in particular but insinuated the class would shape up differently than it appears now.

Those two statements (there will be defections from the current commitment list and transfers from the current roster) are basically true for every program in the country every year.

Hmm. Wonder if that means CZA is staying

How many Power 5 schools will not have (1) transfers and (2) a different looking commitment list than they have right now? Serious, question. Any? I know he is just giving fans what they want, any little bit of legit info. But seriously, this his statement might as well have said the sky is blue. Unless he names specific names this info is pointless. And he is not, and should not, name names of who will transfer and who will be cut from the commit list.

It was in response to a question so I think he was sort of stating the obvious. You know how people can ask the dumbest questions sometimes.

After looking through each of the currently committed 2015 Vol recruits, I've noticed that 8 of our 15 recruits have not taken an official visit yet or had an in-home visit (that we know of). Therefore, if we had a ton of recruits interested in committing, and we didn't want to turn any of them away, any of the following 8 could be Blueshirted/Greyshirted:

Corey Henderson
Brandon Johnson
Austin Pope
Devante Brooks
Ryan Johnson
Daniel Bituli
Tim Hart
Ja'Quain Blakely

First off, I know this means nothing right now, as the staff may set up an official/in-home visit with any and all of these guys at some point in January. Second, I know Doug Mathews and some other insiders have stated that at this time, our staff doesn't want to blueshirt any of this year's recruiting class, so as to save as much space for a potentially elite 2017 class. Just wanted to throw this out there in case we have more elite prospects than we had originally planned for and didn't know how to make the numbers work.

If anybody can find where one of these guys took an OFFICIAL visit, I'll edit. But in the meantime, we still seem to have some flexibility in terms of numbers, albeit at the expense of the 2017 class. TIA GBO.

Bump- Numbers Update.

Following the Tatum commitment, we now have 17 known commitments for the 2016 class. Adding them in to what we have returning from the current roster, we have (according to my potentially-flawed roster) 83 scholarship players on the roster for next season.

I'm assuming we sign 21 players in this class (due to 4 previous blueshirts), then expect a couple more (non-seniors) from the current roster to leave. Any more than that, and I'm not sure how we fill out that 85 number other than assigning scholarships to Walk-Ons (as long as they've been on campus for more than 2 years, they don't count against a recruiting class if they get a scholarship) or more blueshirts in this class (which the staff has apparently said isn't going to happen).

Not taking any more attrition (or early NFL Draft entrees) into account currently, the 2016 Vols roster (with current commits) would have-

QB- 3 (Dobbs, Dormady, Guarantano)
RB- 5 (Hurd, Kamara, J.Kelly, Young, Fils-Aime)
OL- 16 (Blair, Weisman, Kendrick, Sanders, Thomas, Robertson, Raulerson, Mosley, J.Jones, Hall, Boulware, Richmond, Stewart, R.Johnson, Niehaus, & Tatum)
WR- 11 (Blanc, Croom, North, J.Smith, George, Malone, Williams, Jennings, Perry, B.Johnson, C.Henderson)
TE- 6 (Stockstill, Et.Wolf, Jk.Johnson, Creamer, Pope, D.Brooks)

DE- 7 (L.Lewis, Vereen, Barnett, Mixon, Phillips, D.Taylor, Butcher)
DT- 6 (O'Brien, Vickers, A.Johnson, McKenzie, Tuttle, Picou)
OLB- 8 (Reeves-Maybin, McDowell, El.Berry, Bates, A.Smith, Sapp, Bituli, Blakely)
ILB- 4 (Bynum, Bryant, Kirkland, Hart)
CB- 10 (Sutton, Foreman, Moseley, Martin, D.Henderson, Gaulden, M.Abernathy, D.Miller, Osborne, Buchanan)
S- 3 (T.Kelly Jr., Ev.Berry, Griffin)

K- 1 (Medley)
P- 2 (Daniel, Townsend)
LS- 1 (Lovingood)

Obvious need at safety, plus the staff looks to be adding DL and WR. Should be interesting to see how much this changes over the next month leading up to Signing Day. GBO!

Two disagreements.

1. If it comes to Stockstill keeping his scholarship or signing another player, he will likely not have his scholarship renewed.

2. Bullock will be a RS JR and likely still on scholarship.

I'd anticipate someone else leaving before Jones taking back a scholarship he just awarded a walk-on that's worked hard for his chance. Stockstill is Alex Ellis 2.0. He won't lose his scholly, IMO.

And Bullock is currently a RS JR, would be a RS SR if he stayed, but he participated in Senior Day activities and is expected to move on.

Good to know on Bullock. We will see about Stockstill after NSD. The scholarships are awarded annually so technically it wouldn't be taking it back. All 85 scholarships are awarded each year even if there aren't 85 scholarship players like last season hence Daniel, Ellis, and Stockstill. The best walk-ons get those scholarships, but they aren't guaranteed for the rest of their time at UT.

My #'s are pretty close to yours. :hi:

31 offense (incl. Stocstill & Stewart), 31 defense, 4 ST is 66. 17 commits would give us 83.

Bullock particated in Senior Day by walking through the T our last home game. I don't believe he'll be on the roster in 2016.

Agree about Stocstill....especially with Croom moving to TE.

Alright, a little Numbers Game for you all-

OLB- 8 (Reeves-Maybin, McDowell, El.Berry, Bates, A.Smith, Sapp, Bituli, Blakely)

CB- 9 (Sutton, Foreman, Moseley, Martin, D.Henderson, Gaulden, M.Abernathy, D.Miller, Osborne)

Hope this all makes sense. This is a talented roster, and a deep one. Obvious needs at OT and Safety, but Butch & Co. look to be stocking up talent for years to come. GBO.

Croom to TE....Jennings and Gaulden to safety.

With 17 commits and the rumored number of 21, all indications from VQ is that this staff is looking to close with 2 DL (probably 1 DE and 1 DT), 1 WR, and 1 S. If a guy like Dickerson or another elite player want in, I'd bet we see another commit blueshirt.

Targets-

DE - Jonathan Kongbo, Jeffery Simmons, JaQuan Bailey, Jordan Woods

DT - Derrick Brown, Aaron Thompson, Chris Daniels

WR - Mecole Hardman, Velus Jones, Marquez Callaway, Mykel Jones, Ahmmon Richards, Clyde Chriss, Binjimen Victor, Latrell Williams, Keyshawn Young, Willie Johnson, Tyler Byrd?

S - Nigel Warrior

Others - Landon Dickerson (OL), Jaleel Laguins (LB)

IF they want in. You find a way to make that happen.

Total speculation, but Tim Hart is tweeting about ppl lying to your face and said fans don't know how it really is....sounds like he got the gitshirt smh

If so it's just another case of burning instate bridges. When TN high school coaches start advising their kids away from considering or picking UT, no one needs question why.
