The Numbers Thread

Lol. Let it play out before you speculate.

It doesn't really need to play out for me. Seeing all the TN kids sign with all these other schools just confirms what others have said. Instate recruiting is not the focus it should be. When a Ole Miss, a A&M, or a Michigan thinks TN kids be it a 3 star or a 4 star are worth a scholarship this year, I couldn't blame that high school coach at all to remind his 4-5 star kids in 2017 to remember that UT didn't bother the year before. We have what, 4 TN kids in a class of 17? 3 if Hart has been dropped. Warrior, Brown, Thompson, Williams, Woods, none of these guys are instate. 3 out of a class of 21-22? Ridiculous imo.

We weren't high on Matthews and stopped pursuing. Dodson is solid but Blakely is a better athlete and we already have a ton of depth at LB. I agree that Nate Johnson should have had a committable offer be he was offered a blue shirt for whatever reason. It's clear we are making big time pushes for in-state in '17. It was just a weaker in-state class this year. I agree we shouldn't burn a bridge, but at the end of the day it is what's best for both sides. You're way over reacting right now. Next year's class will have a number of in-state players.

You're absolutely right! Signing Warrior, Brown, Thompson, Williams, or Wood would be stupid! Might as well cancel next season.

5-7

People also need to understand team needs. If we are stacked a DE like we are at the moment and there are five four star DE's instate that year. You can't sign them all.

You have to recruit to fill your teams needs at the time not just sign kids from instate because they are getting offers from other schools.

I agree. You have to recruit for needs.

WR commitments
B.Johnson, C.Henderson, J.George all 3*

Instate WRs
D.Vaughn, D.Mitchell, R.Groves, N.Johnson all 4*

All I'm saying if you focus on instate, the talent is there.

Our evaluations being done by Butch, and both the Bob's, have proven to be elite. So if they evaluate a 4-star according to some 'analyst' on a recruiting site but their evaluation is that they don't want the player then that is what it is. You don't go against your evaluation just because they are in-state. That is stupid. UT only missed out on a couple of in-state recruits that they actually wanted (and one was from Memphis and committed to Oregon, so in-state was obv no advantage with him). Contrary to what rivals/247/etc. have to say this is a weak in-state class. 2017 is much better. And if we strike out on lots of in-state 2017 recruits then you would have a legit argument. Because we DO want lots of in-state 2017 recruits.

Just looking at the top 10 for in-state this year, can we compare situations-

1. Dillon Mitchell- We wanted him. He's a Memphis kid that fell in love with Oregon. It happens.

2. Daniel Bituli - UT Commit.

3. JoeJuan Williams - I think the staff sees him as a safety, maybe even a LB down the line. JW said he didn't want to move to LB, and I think our staff only wants one safety in this class (Mr. Warrior).

4. Bryce Mathews - Think the staff sees him as a guard. We have a better target in Landon Dickerson.

5. Ryan Johnson - UT Commit.

6. Donte Vaughn - CB/S prospect. Staff apparently told him we didn't have room in the secondary for him. Again, if we get Warrior, then it's all good.

7. Emmit Gooden - JUCO bound.

8. Gabe Angel - TE. We were in on Devante Brooks at the time this guy committed to Ole Miss. Healthy Brooks is better, IMO. Also have Pope, who killed it on the camp circuit over the summer.

9. Nygel Edmonds - Already had Osborne in when this guy committed to Stanford (now at Cal).

10. Ikenna Okeke - Again, safety prospect. See Warrior, Nigel. Can't blame him for committing elsewhere when he was only going to be a backup plan if Warrior went elsewhere.

As for others, I think Blakely has more speed than Dodson and is a better fit in this defense. At the time Groves committed to UNC, we had other WR targets we felt we had a good chance on. As for Nate Johnson, the staff apparently offered him a blueshirt. Yeah, he committed to Michigan, but the fact that he's taking OV's all January tells me Harbaugh probably told him later after he committed that it's a blueshirt offer or if someone higher on their board comes along, his spot may not be there after all.

So really, I don't think we're really missing out on anyone other than a Memphis kid that was never really interested in UT. Every other player in the state was a lower target on our staff's board compared to the elite prospects we're still in on. In Butch/the Bobs I trust. GBO.

Yep. Take the best players it doesn't matter where they live. 2017 sound like the year to look inside the fence though.

After looking through each of the currently committed 2015 Vol recruits, I've noticed that 8 of our 15 recruits have not taken an official visit yet or had an in-home visit (that we know of). Therefore, if we had a ton of recruits interested in committing, and we didn't want to turn any of them away, any of the following 8 could be Blueshirted/Greyshirted:

Corey Henderson
Brandon Johnson
Austin Pope
Devante Brooks
Ryan Johnson
Daniel Bituli
Tim Hart
Ja'Quain Blakely

First off, I know this means nothing right now, as the staff may set up an official/in-home visit with any and all of these guys at some point in January. Second, I know Doug Mathews and some other insiders have stated that at this time, our staff doesn't want to blueshirt any of this year's recruiting class, so as to save as much space for a potentially elite 2017 class. Just wanted to throw this out there in case we have more elite prospects than we had originally planned for and didn't know how to make the numbers work.

If anybody can find where one of these guys took an OFFICIAL visit, I'll edit. But in the meantime, we still seem to have some flexibility in terms of numbers, albeit at the expense of the 2017 class. TIA GBO.

Just thought I'd bump this and update by saying the only 2 remaining qualifiers for a blueshirt this class would now be Pope & Brooks. Henderson, R.Johnson, Blakely & Bituli all had in-home visits, Hart is gone, and Niehaus, Buchanan, & B.Johnson all took OVs this past weekend.

Following the Hart decommitment, we now have 16 known commitments for the 2016 class. Adding them in to what we have returning from the current roster I have, we have 80 scholarship players on the roster for next season (taking North, Blair, and S.Jones off the roster).

I'm assuming we sign 21 players in this class (due to 4 previous blueshirts). Any more attrition, and I'm not sure how we fill out that 85 number other than assigning scholarships to Walk-Ons (as long as they've been on campus for more than 2 years, they don't count against a recruiting class if they get a scholarship) or more blueshirts in this class (which the staff has said isn't going to happen).

Assuming no more attrition, the 2016 Vols roster (with current commits) would have-

QB- 3 (Dobbs, Dormady, Guarantano)
RB- 5 (Hurd, Kamara, J.Kelly, Young, Fils-Aime)
OL- 15 (Weisman, Kendrick, Sanders, Thomas, Robertson, Raulerson, Mosley, J.Jones, Hall, Boulware, Richmond, Stewart, R.Johnson, Niehaus, & Tatum)
WR- 9 (Blanc, J.Smith, George, Malone, Williams, Jennings, Perry, B.Johnson, C.Henderson)
TE- 7 (Croom, Stockstill, Et.Wolf, Jk.Johnson, Creamer, Pope, D.Brooks)

DE- 7 (L.Lewis, Vereen, Barnett, Mixon, Phillips, D.Taylor, Butcher)
DT- 6 (O'Brien, Vickers, A.Johnson, McKenzie, Tuttle, Picou)
OLB- 8 (Reeves-Maybin, McDowell, El.Berry, Bates, A.Smith, Sapp, Bituli, Blakely)
ILB- 3 (Bynum, Bryant, Kirkland)
CB- 10 (Sutton, Foreman, Moseley, Martin, D.Henderson, Gaulden, M.Abernathy, D.Miller, Osborne, Buchanan)
S- 3 (T.Kelly Jr., Ev.Berry, Griffin)

K- 1 (Medley)
P- 2 (Daniel, Townsend)
LS- 1 (Lovingood)

All that to say, barring any more decommitments, I'm guessing we add 5 more recruits to this class (best case being Dickerson, Warrior, Brown, Kongbo, and 1WR out of Callaway, VelusJones, and Ahmmon Richards.

Do you key this into every thread or do you cut and paste?

Cut and paste screams laziness. Put in the work. In regards to where I've posted this type of thought, probably 2-3 threads. This one, Tim Hart, for sure. I do think if Buchanan takes a visit to OSU we might see a spot open up there. I mentioned that in that thread. Hope this was helpful.

If I had to pick between recruiting in TN OR recruiting in FLA, GA and NC, give me the latter. If getting better players means burning bridges, light 'em up!
