The Numbers Thread

This just shows me the wonders of Butch Jones. This is a great problem. Having so many kids that want to play for us and not knowing if you can take them all.

WE ARE BACK BUTCH!!!

I will go out on a limb and say at least 3 kids who are committed now will not sign with us in February.

we are about 7 months away from signing day, so I would not worry too much about the numbers until then.

Bama has 20 commits and I doubt Saban is worried about numbers right now.

I think we have more recruiting ammunition now, Get on the Big Orange Train or get left behind.

I think the thing people need to stop worrying about is the *'s. Just because a kid is a 3*, does not mean he immediately goes in the "if we need to drop them later list". That is just nonsense IMO.

Ok, so now at 17 commitments.

IF...IF...they can take up to 24...

QB-2 Dormady, Jennings
RB-2 Reid, Kamara
WR-3 Williams, Bruce, Jefferson
TE-1 Oliver
OL-3 Stewart, Jones, Richmond
DT-3 Picou, Jones, McKenzie
DE-3 Butcher, Jackson, Phillips
LB-3 Cherry, Smith, Sapp
S-1 Griffin
CB-2 Ordway, Martin
LS-1 Lovingood

IMO it has to be Woods as the odd man out. Maybe he sticks IF and only if they miss on Jefferson.

EDIT:

So I see in several threads people are talking about who we may lose from this current class so that we can add "higher rated" guys later on. IMO a lot of times the reason you lose a kid, is partly due to how many you are trying to sign at a given position.

QBs, IMO if they plan on signing just the 2 committed, IMO they stick. Very different skillsets.

RBs, Only taking 2, I think we are fine here. I would assume Reid knows he will likely RS.

WR's, IF Jefferson commits, Bruce is not going anywhere on his own. Only way he is not a Vol is if CBJ drags him off campus. Williams won't be intimidated by anyone. No reason to think we have an issue here.

TE's, Oliver is it. No reason to think he is going anywhere.

OL, Stewart or Jones would not be affected at all by adding Richmond. IMO those 2 would give him a piggy back ride from Memphis to Knoxville if he needed transportation.

DT, Could Picou be concerned IF Jones and McKenzie both commit? I suppose I could see that. IMO his GF going to be a Lady Vol keeps him in Orange.

DEs, Butcher is as Vol as you can get. Phillips would be the last piece to the DE puzzle and IMO would fit perfectly. Jackson would be the only one I would watch and for no other reason but IF they try and tell him it's OT or nothing at UT. The kid is all Vol, but I could see that being an issue IF they tried it.

LBs, Cherry is a legacy. Smith fills a void. IMO Sapp completes the LB class. All 3 play different LB roles. No reason to think one would affect the others commitment wise.

CBs, Tough to see a problem here as of yet. We don't have any. :)

S's, With only taking Griffin IMO, no worries here.

LS, Lovingood is it. No worries here.

I'm not ever one to get in the middle of stuff like this but I think he is probably referring to your position on Gibson.

I kind of expected that, but was going to play along. :)

No reason to wait, I guess.

If CBJ takes their commitment, gotta roll with it.

I'd note that CBJ has taken Kyle Oliver's commitment. He has NOT taken Torrance Gibson's.

I'm rolling with it.

I have learned not to question this. I asked the same thing last year about the 2014 class. It will all work out. The coaches are only going to accept the best players available. Players will be asked to go other places and we will have decommits. No worries here.

Sorry to spoil your fun. ;)

We got 16 now, 3 or 4 will go somewhere else, 1 or 2 with grades by the time NSD gets here just hope top 10 recruiting class.

Sit back and enjoy. It's better to have these big time players worried about available spots to play for UT once again. They are jumping in early for this reason.

I would point out that if you look at the 247 "composite" rankings for 2014, UT signed 16 3* recruits. They passed on 4* kids like DJ Smith and Chris Lammons. Why? Because the position was full. Both Smith and Lammons had higher "rankings" than Berry, Berry, Moseley, Gaulden, or Payne.

I would not just assume the UT coaches would "make room" cause a kid has more stars or is ranked higher. JMO

Excited to get Oliver, another in-state kid.

But should we be concerned that season hasn't even started yet and we're already filling up the class? Weren't we suppose to have less available spots this year?

Strange. A few years ago when we had the son of a legendary coach running things, we were wondering why good players did not sign with Tennessee. Now, we worry about them signing too fast?

Don't forget, we had several de-commit last year. Brown, Booth, Lambert to name three. Not being a Debbie Downer, but a recruiting class can be a very fluid situation. If they sign faster, that is a good thing. Shows the future signees if they want to be a Vol, get in early. By the time you get through enjoying all the attention elsewhere, we may not have room in the inn.

Though I am excited about each and every commit, I don't stress about it until NSD. Then and only then, I celebrate the signees and walk-ons.

I don't think anyone has said but there is always a couple of guys who are currently on the team that probably want be by next (2015) season.

Just look at this year Fergie, we still don't know if Howard will be back or not etc...

So you always sign the limit and then let the numbers work there self out.
