The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Honestly I’m not counting them until I see it happen...I know what they’ve said but many kids say that. If I’m Wideman and I get to campus and see Vescovi/Springer/James/Johnson/Bailey all in front on me and already acclimated with the team I’m not very interested in committing to a basketball season when I likely ride the pine. That’s a ton of time for him to invest already on football and then straight into basketball when he likely doesn’t get big minutes anyways.
This. I'm banking on neither of them playing meaningful minutes in the foreseeable future.

This is just a guess by me but I feel like Jalen Johnson will be a grad transfer next year.

Vescovi/Springer
Springer/Vescovi
JJJ
Pons
Fulky

I'm not sure who will be the main ball handler between Vescovi or Springer but both are capable and I think even with both in the lineup at the same time they will mix it up with who will bring the ball up. Once we get they get in their half court offense the 1 and 2 are pretty much interchangeable. With the motion, screens, and hedges. Springer definitely is the quicker of the two with the ball in his hands so if they need to push the ball up he's the guy. Both have really good court vision. We'll be in good hands next year and have JJJ that can also be a backup if we need him to bring the ball up. We're going to be extremely athletic and even better defensively.

Defensively I'd love to see a lineup of

Springer 6'5
Keon 6'5
JJJ 6'6
Pons 6'6
Fulk 6'9

Is a lengthy and super athletic lineup.
Little small ball action, it’s always fun, would we be a run and gun with this lineup or are fulk and pons most suited for the half court game?

Wideman will eventually play some basketball at UT. Probably, not as a freshman, but eventually and he will be good. TGO, could possibly be right, he could decide to concentrate on basketball instead of football after a year or 2. ..... Or Wideman could end up having a career like Charlie Ward minus the Heisman Trophy, probably just winning the Fred Biletnikoff (best WR) award, instead. Once in a generation type athlete that could excel in both sports, imo.

I mean Arkansas had a football player on their teams and he even plays. It's not that wild a concept.

I see no point trying to argue about it though, both the football and basketball staff as well as both recruits have said "they're gonna play basketball" so at this point the assumption is both walk-on for the basketball team. I'm okay with that because I think both can help the basketball team by being walk-ons and being in practice from Jan-March

How it impacts them as football players is up for debate. Quite a few really good football players have missed spring camp and been productive in Fall.

Really liked what I saw from JJJ last night. He was very efficient and looked aggressive. His 3 point shot looks good. Just needs to work on staying on balance on his mid-range shots.

If he fixes that and attacks off the dribble more he is going to be a star next year.

@MoCo_Vol hope you noticed Bowden draw the assignment against Lawson. Lawson didn’t score until midway thru the second half and only scored 2 baskets with Bowden on him. One was the baseline highly contested lucky bounce late in the game and the other was the 3 where Bowden mistakenly helped on the drive.

Anyone going to the game Tuesday? I'm gonna be in town from VA, I'd like to catch the game and maybe some food and drinks before or after. Haven't been down to Knox in a while

I've already explained why Pons is the better defender in my opinion, nothing has changed.

Pons guarded 3 or 4 players once again, even shutting down Kotsar for a stretch. He recorded 3 blocks 7 rebounds and was 2nd on the team in scoring.

You have changed your tune my Man.
You claimed Pons draws the opponents best player and now you are back tracking by saying be guards 3 or 4 different Guys. I said Bowden draws the best player and that was proven with him checking Lawson the entire game. You said Bowden doesn’t do that.

As frustrating as Bowden has been on offence he has been exceptional on man to man defense. The game against Lawson was just the latest example. He moves his feet, stays in position and has the length to challenge jumpers. Pons is very good but in a different way. He will give you highlight blocks but is not the fundamental man to man defender Bowden is. Pons is very good at defending bigger guys inside which is something Bowden can't do. I am glad to have them both and don't underestimate the impact a big block has on how guys go to the paint the next time down the court and how it impacts their future shot selection. With JJJ, Springer and Keon we should have some shut down type defender next year that can give opposing teams fits.
