The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

I’m going to say something that could be very unpopular but needs to be said.. we shouldn’t expect to turn around and be a great team next year. Yes we bring in three really talented players, but they will be freshman. We have no proven back to the basket post threat. We could be really good, but right now there’s no reason to believe we will be. That could be apathy, but I feel it’s truth.
You’re a pretty consistent critic of Fulk, so I see why you feel that way. If you don’t believe he can carry the team, then next year easily would be just decent.

He’s improved but he’s still not a true back to the basket big like the team needs add a true big for next year and let’s ride.

I kinda get what you're saying, but almost all of his paint touches come with his back to the basket. He isn't the type to rely solely of facing you up and getting to the hole. He relies on his fadeaway, spin moves, and rising over opponents, but they all start with him having the ball and his back to the basket.

It sounds more like you don't believe he is a banger in the post, and that is mostly true. But I think he has proven he can score with his back to basket. He just isn't going to overwhelm anyone with strength and power in the paint.

I don't completely disagree with you. I think we make the tournament but wouldn't be suprised if we are outside of the top 25.

As this year has proven, the roster potentially can change drastically from what we expect it to be now. What if Fulky got injured and Pons decides to play professionally in Europe next year? Plus folks are projecting a lot of production from guys currently in hs and that’s proven to be very hit or miss with guys outside the top 10.

I think he has the highest shooting percentage on the team and in the SEC. We would have lost a lot more games if he was not on the team.

Not saying we wouldn’t have. He’s better catching at about the free throw line and facing up. Not really a back to the basket guy.

Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to say lol. He’s not a guy like Williams was where you can throw it down to him on the block and expect him to bang his guy down and get an easy bucket. Easy buckets are what this team needs. Was hoping uros could be that guy, but so far he seems pretty “green”

You adjust expectations, much the way any logical person should’ve this year when Turner went down. Right now on paper you return everyone except Bowden, add in 2 Top 20 players, and a Top 40 as well, also get a guy eligible who was Top 100 and has had a year to practice with the team...at this very early stage I would set an O/U somewhere around 22.5 wins.

I’m curious how many guys in the country are giving their teams 13ppg 6rpg and shooting better than 60% from the field, I’m guessing not many.

I said a few weeks back that Fulky had reached his ceiling and I really wasn’t accurate with that take then. I think the one way he can really improve is passing out of the double teams he’s starting to see now. He was always a good passer in years past but not now really. He needs to be able to move the ball better.

You can score 20 points in a game then the next score 5 or 6 and average 13 a game. (Which is what he does) Not to say that's all bad but I think Dal's point is that he's not a dominating guy that's going to get you 13 a game against the wiley's and Uzzi bukis every game which would translate to more wins against the LSU, Auburns and Kansases. he's not williams and that's okay if we could get him some help next season.

I think there’s quite a bit of room for improvement still, and besides certain examples I just don’t think a guy makes that big of a jump in 1 year and is maxed out. He’s still very left hand dominant when scoring, always spinning back to the strong hand, developing some right hand moves and especially that spin would be huge. I also think his shot is better than given credit for, he’s not taking many but I’m really curious his percentage outside of 12’, seems he has hit at about 75%...continuing to show that part of his game and even extend that out will make him even more effective.

I get people scoffed at the idea when Barnes said they were higher on Fulky than Williams, but it’s not seeming like that crazy of an idea anymore. I could see him averaging 15-16ppg next year and once again being very efficient in doing so.

Fulky has scored 5 or less 1 time this year, 21/29 games he has been in double digits.

Azubuike has scored 5 or less 2 times this year, 21/29 games he has been in double digits.

Williams as a junior scored 5 or less 1 times, 23/31 games he was in double digits.

If that was Dal’s point as I just showed it’s still a bad take, and further evidence of the perception vs. reality.

One thing that impresses me with Fulk is his ability to hit difficult shots. He has a hard time getting position against guys that are allowed to mug him but he is good at playing through contact to get his shots up and they fall a lot of time.

I'd like to see him develop a left handed hook from the left block as that would be moving away from double teams and would leave the guard/wing in the area with a free run at an offensive rebound.
