The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Which leads to my point. If North Carolina is willing to pay 2 million dollars for a second round pick, why can’t Tennessee pay 4+ for an elite talent?
Because if you are talking for one year, that is twice what we are allegedly paying, per year, the future franchise QB of our football team at a heavily predominant football school. That just isn’t going to happen.

I’ve watched Tennessee basketball since I was roughly 10 years old (2007) since then I have experienced one SEC regular season title, and 1 SEC tournament championship. I live in the state of Kentucky around people who have experienced six SEC championships, six regular season championships, and one national championship.

I have experienced so, so much heartbreak. I’ve also experienced so many great moments. I would go as far as saying winning the SEC Tournament May have been the best day of my life (besides my sister being born). I cried like a baby. My whole life people have talked **** about Tennessee, I haven’t heard a damn thing this year. So, excuse me if I don’t give one single flying **** what people who only watch when we’re good say. I’m twenty five years old. I’m not getting older. I don’t know how long I’ll live. I want to experience one national championship before I die. I would gladly trade 10 years of my life and it means I get to experience that. That may sound weird to some, but that’s how much this **** means to me.

I realize nobody cares, but man a lot of stuff has combined to just kind of kill my interest in following CBB as closely anymore. Officials being stunningly incompetent, transfer portal making every team brand new each year, NIL making players even more of mercenaries than before. Idk, I think I’m going to disinvest a bit.
Again, who cares I get it, and the same stuff has been said a million ways by a million posters. It’s just a bummer, and I wanted to vent

I feel that. Sometimes I think the same thing. I love college athletics, but the new NIL paradigm is not good for the long term health of the sport. Things are too transitory now and have a free agency after every season now is not enjoyable.

I think football can survive it more than basketball, but either way it’s definitely not the product I grew up loving.

The good thing is baseball seems to be well on its way to ELITE status under Vitello, and I don’t think baseball is a big enough revenue sport for NIL to change it too much. Probably a good time to get even more invested there. Might be our best shot at a championship in any sport.

Unfortunately, I can’t stand baseball 😂 I mean I enjoy going to a game but watching it on TV puts me to sleep. Basketball is my favorite, then football (and I watch collegiate wrestling when it’s on)

Can you teach me the secret to not getting older?

I’m right there with you. The sad thing is that the kids who do it the right way, for example JJJ, are probably getting left behind monetarily. These bidding wars are only going to increase in intensity, and like it or not, money is finite.

Not finite with how the Fed has been printing it!

I’ve literally had this same thought. And their NIL deals will probably go towards covering tuition 😂

I actually feel like baseball has the best method of dealing with HS/Pros.

I wish Basketball would do the same. Outta HS you can go straight to the draft OR college, but if you choose the college route ya have to be in for at least 3 years.

Granted that still doesn't change the free transfer and players moving with that, and in basketball it's always going to be a concern. Only 5 players on a court with a 13 man roster = someone ain't getting enough minutes and will find them elsewhere ESPECIALLY with NIL being what it is right now.

I've liked this idea for many years, but I feel it should be slightly different and only 2 years for basketball. 1AD players are rarely not considered that by their senior year (there are exceptions) so let them go pro first if they want, but the ones who come to college stay for 2 years instead of 3. Rarely does the 2nd to 3rd year gap make a huge difference in the players pro-future, so they should know by the 2nd year if they're draftable.

True. The 11.7 scholarship rule is an absolute joke. It’s truly shameful that Division 1 schools aren’t able to offer a full ride to these athletes. And, the resistance to allowing a 3rd paid assistant is mind-boggling as well.

At least with NIL for baseball, guys like Jordan Beck (future first round talent) will be able to make enough to hopefully cover the cost of tuition. Only in baseball can a guy be a first round talent in a major sport and be paying out of pocket for his schooling….

Could also just remove the years and set the age at 20 or older by the time the NBA draft occurs.

A few scattered thoughts:

1) Personally, I am not "panicked" about the 2022-2023 season in regards to what has happened this off-season. I think it is more accurate to describe my feelings as "concerned for the future" which is 2023 and beyond. We do lose a TON of production after this season, and the grain of salt rumors indicate we're not necessarily willing to adapt to the new NIL paradigm that will be necessary for sustaining success.

2) I do love me some hard data and statistics, but I find it hard to believe that simply adding Tyreke Key while losing Fulky, Chandler, and BHH will mean this team is better than last year's squad as this projection indicates. I get that these are just projections, but I imagine that is a squad closer to 4th in the SEC than #2 in the nation.

I still prefer the option to give kids a choice to go pro out of HS or not. I know it's rarely a long term successful venture but honestly I feel like as talented as kids are now, there's reason they could be more successful than years past. Still so much variance in physical maturity but with social media and technology + stats it's much simpler to know what a HS player is than 20 years ago. Always felt they should have the option.

Yeah guess the age requirement would remove the straight outta HS option. Yeah maybe just pro OR 2 years in college minimum is the best option.

I would be interested to know, not sure there’s anyway too, the average and maybe worst cases of Top 5-10 Barttorvik rank preseason and what they end up being? I ask cause, no way I think anyone thinks we are Top 5, but I also don’t think we are in for a doomed season as things stand either.

Yet we have the most experienced roster and return the most minutes in the SEC. From a team that finished 2nd in the regular season and won a SEC title. All of those players are expected to continue to get better. Also what boosts the projection is that our front court benefits from the addition of ORN who rates better than BHH and Uros, and factors in an expected jump for Aidoo. I doubt we finish 2nd either but this is a far cry from the current sentiment in this forum.

So we have 2 spots open right now, correct?

I assume staff will want to fill them with this class, Phillips would still be a take but with no Yuri in the cards are we looking at any other PGs or would we look to fill the other spot with a big?

3 spots open currently…I expect another wave of transfers to hit in the next week or so.

His projection like Mashack to make a healthy jump in efficiency this year. Still not a ton of minutes to be had but between he and Powell I expect we’ll have better production in that role than we had last year.
