It was looking a lot like the KY game for a while. It seemed like every time we’d score they were quickly answering. I’ve also maybe never seen so many crap scores by an opponent. Banking in a 3 or two. Banked in at least 2 free throws. Several other prayers bouncing in. It was like they had Sister Jean sitting on their bench.
The NCAA needs to do something about the end of game flow. From 2:00 to 0:30 must have taken 15 or 20 minutes. Almost all of the reviews were nothing burgers except they were giving Missouri a lot of free time outs - which was probably worse as far as giving a team an advantage than missing a call or two.
Mashack has solid scoring output in the first half last night, but it’s becoming more obvious by the game how much better our offense is with him on the bench. When he’s out there, he goes totally unguarded and it clogs up driving lanes and takes away scoring chances from our bigs. Love Shack, but I think he’s not gonna see much time in the 2H of big games down the stretch, barring foul trouble or situation defensive spots.Mashack had 7 points in the first half
It’s also true that our team defense is nearly identical with/without him on the court, so it’s not as if that is making up for the much worse offense.Mashack has solid scoring output in the first half last night, but it’s becoming more obvious by the game how much better our offense is with him on the bench. Yeah I thought I remembered you posting some by-possession data a week or so ago about that. I hate it for Shack since his career could end with him playing less than he has in a while, but he’s had 3 years to develop a serviceable, shoot around jumper. That’s all he needed to open up the court, but it’s seemingly too late. It’s also true that our team defense is nearly identical with/without him on the court, so it’s not as if that is making up for the much worse offense.

Plus/minus can sometimes be a useless stat, especiallly for a singular game, but with a big sample size it’s usually pretty telling. In SEC play only, so 10 games…
Gainey has the team best at +65 and Mashack has the team worst at -15
From roughly the time Mashack went out until the 4-minute mark, we had a 25-point swing. Roughly a 12-13 minute stretch of absolutely our best offensive stretch of the season.Yep, love Mashack and there have been games where his defense helped turn the tide for sure. But with Gainey's improvement from last year to this season he's just a better player all around.
The important thing is that Barnes & staff seem to be a bit quicker to change this year than in past seasons. They realized last night they needed to have every player as a threat on offense to put pressure on Mizzou's guards so they'd have less juice on offense. And boy did it work.
There were a few back to back possessions where Grill got absolutely ran to death by Gainey then did nothing on offense but try to catch his breathe.
