The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

It was looking a lot like the KY game for a while. It seemed like every time we’d score they were quickly answering. I’ve also maybe never seen so many crap scores by an opponent. Banking in a 3 or two. Banked in at least 2 free throws. Several other prayers bouncing in. It was like they had Sister Jean sitting on their bench.

The NCAA needs to do something about the end of game flow. From 2:00 to 0:30 must have taken 15 or 20 minutes. Almost all of the reviews were nothing burgers except they were giving Missouri a lot of free time outs - which was probably worse as far as giving a team an advantage than missing a call or two.

Man you're not joking!

Perkins shoots 29.4% from deep coming into the game, against us he goes 3 of 3
Gray is a 50% FT shooter, hits 3 of 4 and banks in 2 of them

Bates missing 2 FTs though wasn't expected either

Bit of a weird game, our turnovers in the first half and us missing FTs allowed them to get a lead. I will say though their offense is legit.

Another officiating tactic that irritates me to no end is evening up the foul count. I think TN had 2 fouls versus KY’s 9 to start the game. That automatically meant that TN was going to get called for everything while KY was able to hack, grab, and clutch while the refs stopped calling them until the number of fouls called was nearly equal. Good coaches exploit this unwritten rule.

Mashack had 7 points in the first half
Mashack has solid scoring output in the first half last night, but it’s becoming more obvious by the game how much better our offense is with him on the bench. When he’s out there, he goes totally unguarded and it clogs up driving lanes and takes away scoring chances from our bigs. Love Shack, but I think he’s not gonna see much time in the 2H of big games down the stretch, barring foul trouble or situation defensive spots.

I mentioned it not long ago, but didn’t wanna put the guy on blast, but it’s been something to watch for awhile. Our analytic numbers with Mashack on the court are bad, no other way to say it, and conversely with Gainey on the court they are extremely high, I’ll be curious to watch if the 2nd half last night will push the staff to play more of Gainey/less of Mashack.

It’s also true that our team defense is nearly identical with/without him on the court, so it’s not as if that is making up for the much worse offense.

Yeah I thought I remembered you posting some by-possession data a week or so ago about that. I hate it for Shack since his career could end with him playing less than he has in a while, but he’s had 3 years to develop a serviceable, shoot around jumper. That’s all he needed to open up the court, but it’s seemingly too late.

Yup.

1st half: 28-34
Mashack 19
Gainey 16
Lanier 14
Zeigler 14
Milicic 14
Okpara 12
Phillips 8
Dubar 3

2nd half: 57-47
Lanier 20
Zeigler 20
Milicic 18
Gainey 18
Okpara 15
Philips 5
Mashack 2
Boswell 2
Dubar 0

Final 18 minutes when Mashack sat we outscored them 57-42

Plus/minus can sometimes be a useless stat, especiallly for a singular game, but with a big sample size it’s usually pretty telling. In SEC play only, so 10 games…

Gainey has the team best at +65 and Mashack has the team worst at -15

Yep, love Mashack and there have been games where his defense helped turn the tide for sure. But with Gainey's improvement from last year to this season he's just a better player all around.

The important thing is that Barnes & staff seem to be a bit quicker to change this year than in past seasons. They realized last night they needed to have every player as a threat on offense to put pressure on Mizzou's guards so they'd have less juice on offense. And boy did it work.

There were a few back to back possessions where Grill got absolutely ran to death by Gainey then did nothing on offense but try to catch his breathe.

This is just me speculating...but there's also a good chance Mashack might have been feeling ill.

Gainey, Igor, and Barnes have all gotten something flu like and could have been that Mashack had it and after the half they just decided to rest him. Chaz & Gainey were playing far better defense 2nd half too so that helped.

I think that part of the issue with big minutes for Mashack is that TN had gotten too predictable. Opponents strategize to shut him down. Mixing up the minutes and rotations can make everybody more productive.

Mashack is necessary when the opponent has one of those players that can go off on the offensive end. Bringing him off of the bench would be a good change up.

With Boswell gaining confidence, perhaps he can make TN less predictable as well. Dubar too - he can help this team the most by contributing in the post.

Also, I think Missouri is better than Florida after watching both a few times this season.

at Memphis to open the season isn't a bad loss
loss to Illinois on neutral court isn't a bad loss
at Auburn
at Texas (probably their weakest loss, but they shot horrible)
at Tennessee

Florida lost at Kentucky, at Tennessee and then vs Missouri

but those are the only 3 current AP 25 teams they've faced. Went 1-3 against them

Not a popular opinion, but one I think Barnes may be coming around to, himself.

Mashack doesn't need to be on the floor for 25-30 minutes a night. There, I said it.

I've felt this way for a while, but knew it wouldn't be met with a lot of support because people love the guy. I do, too. He plays hard, defends his guts out, but we are a team that so often struggles to score the ball. Just go back and watch Mizzou...they didn't even attempt to guard him outside of 20'. They just stuff off on him and essentially add an extra zone paint defender.

And as good of a defender as he is, we have plenty of good defenders. Chaz is the worst defender in that lineup without Shack, and even he isn't an embarrassment. We can live with one average defender if that guy is an offensive threat, which Chaz obviously is when he's working to get open looks.

Mashack was tied with Dubar with the lowest +/- at -7 last night if you need any indication of his overall contribution, and he actually gave us 7 points.

The only argument for him to continue starting is that if you replace him with Gainey, then you have zero scoring punch coming off the bench. Mashack, Phillips, Dubar, and Boswell don't provide much offense if that's all you have available.

I would stick with the same starting 5, but I would be handling substitutions in the first half much like they did the 2nd half last night. Mashack comes out early for Gainey and that lineup rides for awhile, Mashack can then get in there and give most of those guys a blow as he’s versatile.

From roughly the time Mashack went out until the 4-minute mark, we had a 25-point swing. Roughly a 12-13 minute stretch of absolutely our best offensive stretch of the season.
