This is 100% the issue, he doesn’t look at the basket half the time, and teams have responded that way. If he wants that to change that’s completely in his control to do, but as you said to be 3rd in MPG and 6th in FGA/game is a bad strategy. He needs to spend some time with Dubar lol.One issue is just that Mashack simply won't take shots. He's a 47.1% FG (best among guards) and actually shoots 34.4% (2nd on team) from deep higher than Gainey, ZZ, and Igor but he just does not take his looks.
4.4 FGAs per game is nearly half that of Gainey and Igor and even Felix takes more attempts.
It wouldn't be an issue, but Shack is 3rd in minutes and Barnes' philosophy is "take the best shot" and doesn't care who it is coming from.

I almost guarantee you that Dubar is top-2 in shots per minutes played. Irrational confidence and totally void of a conscience.Yeah, Dubar gets another game or two under his belt and he'll move to 6th... (I'm serious he's that close behind)
I would love to see a game where Shack just punishes teams for not respecting him on offense and he drops 20+ or something. One game doing that and suddenly things open up when he's on the court and spacing improves.
Yea at this point it seems mental, and I’m not sure that’s going to change and if you’re the staff obviously at some point you can’t keep hoping it will change. I would love to see them get up big in a game and tell him for the final 7-8 minutes you’re taking every shot down the court that a teammate sets you up for and see what happens.Yeah, Dubar gets another game or two under his belt and he'll move to 6th... Yes, Cade is similar in that he looks to make an impact when he gets in, but he plays pretty good defense considering he's often physically overmatched, and he also plays within the frame of the offensive system. Dubar seems to either play selfishly or with such an unrefined understanding of the offense. Not sure which one it is, honestly. Maybe another year would make a difference, but I doubt he'd stick around for another year to find out.Honestly I don't mind him being aggressive as an off the bench guy. Cade is the same way, but there's just a big difference in Basketball IQ in those two. Cade does all the work and then finds himself in the right spot. Dubar just seems to plan to take the 3s if he has any space sometimes his shot looks rushed or off balance even.
Dubar probably more than any other transfer really needed an extra year. I see how much Gainey has improved from last year to this year and actually think Dubar would have done the same.
Also another problem with Dubar.. He has an ugly shot and have the time it just seems like he's throwing the ball at the basket instead of actually shooting it.Honestly I don't mind him being aggressive as an off the bench guy. This. We are one of the best 3 pt defense teams precisely because we aggressively close out and affect shots (the players aren't trying to block them). It is super frustrating when we foul the shooters and Jahmai specifically shouldn't do this as much as he has this season but you can't ignore the stats. He isn’t actively trying to block them. He is just closing out trying to speed up and change the natural angle of the shot.
But even though it was a super weak call and the guy flopped, he needs to be more careful not to touch them
I feel like he slips more than he should. Like there’s something wrong with his shoes.This. That would be ridiculous if it came from any kind of source with an IQWanna hear something ridiculous? Was listening to a talk show in Memphis this morning and they were trying to come up with a list of their top 5 college basketball coaches. Given the local Memphis bias against UT, I wasn’t expecting much. They listed the usual suspects like Pearl, Cal, Self, Izzo, etc. Even mentioned Greg McDermott and Scott Drew. Then they proceeded down the line and named their “next tier”. Named another 10 coaches and Rick was nowhere to be found. Not a mention. Such a joke but I get used to it around this town.
Actually leaving this game a little annoyed with our sloppy play after getting up early, but those will be some good, teachable moments for Barnes to get at over the next few days. Time to keep the hot shooting rolling and get revenge on the cats.
Vols were sloppy in the end, but had a bunch of turnovers in both halfs. Most of those were essentially unforced. We have to clean these up, and ZZ has had more turnovers this year than any other year. Our turnover rate today was just over 30%.Definitely understand. However, I’m glad in a weird way that we did end the game sloppily. Gives RB something to harp on. A 30 point win on the road would have made it hard to find things to work on. Easier to keep them humble this way.
The 'Cats game is the current biggest game of the year, a win will be huge. Especially after the Vols take care of Vandy, next saturday. I think we are peaking, offensively, right now. Hopefully, it continues in Rupp. Vols are attacking the basket and it's opening up the open 3. Man, I think we got something for UK, come mid-week
Yeah, the open 3, no need for this team to ever shoot 45 three's, we are not settling, attacking the basket. I love it.I hope the team is looking for revenge, they really blew the comeback win at home. I've noticed since those 45 attempts from deep though the last 3 games we've kept it under 23 attempts.
Also glad Kentucky blew out South Carolina might have some false confidence now. They've got Butler back though and Carr seems to be playing more minutes. So we have to bring the intensity on defense the whole game.
Absolutely, kinda what I was getting at. Great win, much to improve on for Tuesday.Definitely understand. However, I’m glad in a weird way that we did end the game sloppily. I’m very curious to see if Pope will alter his defensive strategy against the Vols. Will he drop down again defensively as he did at TBA? Has our torrid shooting changed his mind on how to defend us? Ultimately, how many 3’s will we shoot this time? Will Mashack get 26 minutes as he did against Oklahoma? A lot to ponder.Playing with a big lead in a game you have no fear of getting away can be tough on the concentration, but your point is a good one. They should have been up 30 at the half given how well they were executing the offense and shooting, but too many turnovers. But Rick has plenty to harp on between now and Tuesday, which is a good thing.
