This team is really versatile with everybody contributing. They’re sort of like the line from that old song “Sixteen Tons”.

“One fist of iron, the other of steel. If the right one don’t get you, then the left one will!” I like the iron and steel in this team. They just keep coming.
Tennessee Earnie Ford Great baritone.

Good to get a win tonight. Refs sucked in this game. Late in the game should have been two offensive fouls on Illinois but the fouls were called on Mashack. This game reminded of the SC game we lost last year were we weren’t allowed to guard them without getting a foul called.

On the final play

“We’ll give you a little history lesson on that play. I was an assistant coach in 1980 at George Mason University. We didn’t have a big recruiting budget, so we decided — Joe Harrington, the head coach — we need to put out a monthly newsletter to all the coaches within a 250 mile radius and try to get George Mason on the map. And so I worked with our SID, and we came up with a segment of it where we were going to call it ‘Coach’s Corner,’ where we want to ask different coaches around the D.C. area or wherever, to put together their favorite play. And so my first time, I drove over to DeMatha (Catholic) High School and asked Morgan Wootten — legendary coach at DeMatha — I said, ‘Coach, you’ve been doing this a long time. I need you to give me your favorite play.’ And he said, ‘okay,’ and he gave it to me. That’s the play we ran today. So that plays been around a long time, but Morgan — God, rest his soul — I mean, again, it was his play and the first one we put in that newsletter that year.”

That is classic Barnes. I love that man.

Sounds like Momma Mashack was not treated well by the Illini fans.

The ones I was around in TBA last year were awful. One spent the entire time before the game explaining to his kid who was about 7 how stupid all the students at Tennessee were and how they would never be able to get into Illinois.

Barnes is an absolute treasure. The guy has forgotten more basketball than most men have ever learned in their lifetimes

We are extremely fortunate to have him as our coach. And I absolutely dread the day he decides to hang it up after such an amazing career.

Illinois Game Notes

Player of the game tonight for Tennessee was Igor Milivic with his 14 big rebounds.

I’m sitting at the Tennessee theater and everyone must have been watching on their phone (me included) because the crowd cheered when Gainey hit that shot. lol.

I’ll post the game video later tonight when I get home for those interested.
