It’s not “pitching” over to first. It’s a pickoff move. It’s designed to keep the runner close so he doesn’t steal 2nd, get in scoring position, then score on a single, which would lose the game at this point.

That said, I sure wish our coach knew as much about baseball as you do. We’d never lose!
