The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

This is solid advice.(well, except the glocks have no soul comment lol) I'd also add CZ pistols to the list as well.

Whatever you buy, you have to shoot it. Don't buy it and put it in a drawer and consider yourself armed. The worst time to learn gun handling is in the middle of a gun fight.
Cheers

Never really appreciated a Glock until I bought one (recently).

They do grow on you over time. They're just so simple, you can customize it any way you'd like. Like the AR is for rifles, the glock is the Mr. Potato head for pistols.

Disagree entirely. The only pistol that comes close to the AR in terms of customization is the 1911.

Nothing against Glock.

Thanks for all of the replies. I mention affordable as in under $1,000 or so. Reliability is the bigger issue. Sounds like a Glock 9mm is a good choice for basic in home protection.

Simplicity is important too. Maybe add a laser, but nothing elaborate. Not interested in a revolver.

I guess you missed the part where I said the glock was simple. There's nothing simple about 1911 customization.

Keep in mind this is coming from a guy going to pick up a brand new colt 1911 in 9mm Monday.

For home protection you might want to check out a .40 or .45 (the .45 actually will have less recoil).

Hollow point 9mm rounds will do just fine. Plus there's a few more rounds in the mag. Dot get me wrong, I love .45 (it's what I carry) but 9mm has grown on me A LOT. The amount of good 9mm defense ammo is plenty.

$1,000 will easily get you a Glock or Springfield XD and a laser/light. Probably a few boxes of good home defense ammo as well.

You've got a tremendous amount of choices for under a $1000
I love 1911's so I would say defintely try a 1911 in .45

What are you getting
I've only got a 92f in 9mm but have thought about getting a 9mm in a 1911 platform

Planning on leaving it bone stock except changing the long trigger for a short, and adding an arched mainspring housing.

Edit.
I wish I could find the bobbed hammer that Hilton Yam at 10-8 performance used to make. They've long since been discontinued.

Glock owners swear by them. Reliable and have no issues. But you're going to be spending no less than 400 and that's if you can find a good deal.

I recently purchased a Taurus pt111 g2 after going back and forth reading reviews. I've had it for a few months now and I've put some round through it. Only 1 jam that was my own fault and no f2f's. You can find them very inexpensive, but it's a quality firearm. About 299 is what I've seen them for now. It's 9mm so ammo is cheaper and it comes with 2 12 round mags.

Go to your local gun shop and hold a few different ones to see what works best for you though.

I can also vouch for the G2 Taurus. Great gun for the money.

I legit appreciate you saying that.

I still come across people who do everything but pat your head and say "That's ok little feller" when you talk about using 9mm.

like the hammer, I'd probably change the grips to the Colt Double Diamond with the Colt Medallions

I'm a fan of the Series 80, have both the full size and the commander

It's kinda the natural reaction, when you shoot both a .45 and 9MM.

Yes, sorry I did miss that. I thought you were talking overall accessories.

But I think you're wrong. Nothing complicated about changing the grips on a 1911. :)

I've told them to hold out there hand and let me shoot it. Just to see if it hurts. Haven't had a taker yet.

I shoot both. Both have their place.

Drives me nuts when people needlessly turn their nose up at it.

At least in the stuff I shoot/carry/keep in the house there's really not a lot of overlap between the 9mms and .45s.
