Any opinion on the .308?

Can pick up a nice rifle. Just not real familiar with this round.

Thanks

Very efficient cartridge known for consistent accuracy. (though obviously the rifle itself will have a lot to do with that) It's still probably the most common sniper round in use. Runs within 100fps of the 30/06 and manages that in a short action.

This, along with a huge variety of rounds available (in normal times at least) for the caliber. Everything from lightweight varmint loads to somewhat heavy hitters in the 180 grain range.

Ammo is generally available in most any stores that carry it.

Nothing in the lower 48 that can't be taken down with a .308 in my opinion.

any advice on selling a handgun? Since I picked up my Walther PPQ the HK p30L is redundant. They are almost identical in ergo's but the trigger of the PPQ is awesome and the HK's is the weak point of the gun.

Not trying to get absolute top dollar but would like to get market value.

Auction sites?

Armslist for private sales.

Otherwise, consignment at a local gun shop.

ETA: H&K Hold some fairly decent resale value. You should get what you are asking.

With Armslist I assume I ship to an FFL - do I have to ship from an FFL or can I ship directly to the buyer's FFL?

If it's out of State, yes, you have to go FFL to FFL. But in state, person to person is okay.

(You're in Tennessee, right?)

Meh, just check local laws to be positive. But generally P2P sales are fine in many States.

Alabama and person to person is fine in state.

So out of state I'll have to have someone ship for me - thanks for clearing that up. I'd rather it be tidy and spend a few bucks more than leaving some loose ends on this type of deal.

P30s are generally popular enough because of the H&K mark on them to sell easily enough. I sold one back, six, eight months ago within a day or two of listing it on Armslist.

Just a trick of the trade, make sure you have your money in hand before you ship anything.

Probably go with Paypal.

Did not know that - will have to check into options.

Any idea what typical consignment commission runs?

Depends on the shop. The local one to me charges 15% of the price you sell it at.

You can do the postal money order thing just as easily. If I can't do cash, that's what I prefer.

My favorite round, though I may be a tad biased

Can you share why? Short form is ok.

My buddy (marine sniper-retired) likes it. His personal weapon is a 280. Sweet. Has a can and everything.

Everything I've read says the round is only good to 300 yards. (Effective) but I also read its a 7.62?? Some say it is good 800+ Yards.

Reading has provided its a good round for bear to antelope to white tail. Seems all purpose

.308 Winchester is the civilian designation of the military 7.62x51mm round. .308 has a higher max pressure load according to SAAMI (62,000 PSI max/proof load of 83,000 PSI minimum) versus the 7.62x51mm (50,000 PSI max/proof load of 67,000 PSI). Has to do with the 7.62x51 having a slightly thicker case and thus less volume for powder.

Not sure where you heard 300 yards...but way off. As stated, 800 with good rounds/rifle/shooter/climatic conditions. 1000 can, has and continues to be done.

False. With practice, good optics and ammo you can group at 1000 meters. In the 90's the standard issue sniper rifle was a modified Remington model 700. Made many 1000 meter hits.

based on seeing what a bullet can do to an antelope I would say that's way too big. Probably about right for larger whitetail but not the smaller varieties. JMO

As a "dedicated" antelope round it's probably not ideal (I'd probably go with a high velocity mid: 25/06, .270, or maybe a .257 Bee) but a .308 would certainly do the job if called upon as long as the shooter knew his ballistics.

Of course, having a reason to "need" another rifle for a particular task isn't a bad thing. :)

many of the guys I met used a 243 (from the AZ Antelope Foundation). I have a pic somewhere of what a 270 can do to an antelope when exiting. It did its job for me but wasn't pretty. Even if he didn't die he wasn't going too far without a shoulder

not sure I'm up for that kind of hunt anymore though so buying a dedicated gun probably wouldn't get past the boss

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I doubt I ever hunt antelope any way. I hunt white tail (deer- :) )

I don't shoot at what I know I won't kill first shot, and I don't kill what I'm not going to eat.

I find no pleasure in killing for leisure.

Think I'll be making the purchase after inspecting the rifle
