The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

I've heard of lots of people using heavier wt Mobil 1 on their guns. To some extent the logic sounds good, it's made to lube parts under shear and heat, right? I've heard some people counter that there are additives (usually detergent agents) found in motor oils that aren't best applied to firearms but an awful lot of people seem happy. Honestly I think the biggest part is that you keep your weapons property lubed with something.

I've been wanting to give Froglube a try.

I have been using synthetic motor oil for 15 years now on everything from my personal collection that some have been run hard to my military issue weapons that most have been run hard. And I have yet to find anything that's affected it, additive or not.

As for the Froglube, I'm not overly fond of something that requires preparation before application. Heating metal parts then applying and whatnot. I want something I can slap on whether it's 10 degrees or 110 degrees that will work. For me, it's a passing fad more than anything and some folks have already gone back to whatever they were using before after they found the hype wasn't as much as they planned for.

But to each their own and I've seen some that swear by it. For me, $8 for a quart of motor oil that will last me a few years if not longer is better than $11 for a 4 ounce bottle that might last me three months.

I've heard a lot of people using non-detergent motor oil. I'll probably give it a shot when I run out of the oil I've got now.

Its funny you mention the AK vs AR thing. Its always interested me the way some stay in their own little worlds based on platform and/or brands when it comes to guns. (I'm not really directing this at any one person, just some gun people in general).

AR, AK, I don't care. I just like guns. AK to AR, old Marlin levers, rusty Smith chief's specials, Taurus and Armscor to Kimber, Colt, etc.

There are positives to almost all of them (provided the price is right). I've had fun shooting an uncle's Kimber and my buddy's overbuilt AR, but just as much fun shooting paper plates with a Hi-point and a questionable .25.

I like shooting myself, but found the problems of trying to stockpile mags and parts for a bunch of different systems to be consuming, both in time and funds. So I standardized on the AR, although in different calibers. Even my -10 has a lot of parts in common with the rest of my -15s, so it's reasonably easy to stock up.

I liked my AKs when I owned them, but just found I liked my ARs more.

I now have an AK I need to try out. Guy at work needed Christmas money, so...I get to explain to the wife why we needed this.

For some reason the cheap, clanky POS's just appeal to me. I was cracking up reading some of the stories people have about cleaning them.

what kind of deal did you get?

350 for the gun, 6 mags, little bit of ammo...

EDIT: 2 of the mags are cheapy Korean ones, so they'll probably lay around until people panic again. Gun runs just fine, I've just got a little work to do on the furniture. Its got a few miles on it.

I don't think I'm hurting on it.

I've known too many people that liked their motor oil for me to say anything negative about the practice myself.

I've also known some people who are true converts to the FL. I like trying new things sometimes just for the hell of it. At some point sheer curiosity will get the best of me.

Romanian build?

Either way, $350 is a good price for a used AK, no matter what.

Yugoslavian Surplus AK-47 Steel 7.62x39mm 30rd Magazine w/ Bolt Hold Open Follower - AK-47 7.62x39mm - Rifle Magazines - Magazines - Accessories

Pretty decent deal on mags there. About the cheapest I've seen in a while.

AK has it's place in history but the versatility and available parts for the AR platform are just unmatched right now.

Its an Inter Ordnance. From what I understand its an American made off the Polish prints.

Didn't really dig a whole lot, at $350 for one that works well I didn't want to talk myself out of it. Looks like they were going 450-500ish before the panic. Thanks for the link, I like PSA. I'll check into them.

Can't argue with the availability of stuff for ARs right now. Seems like any living soul with access to a machine shop is cranking out stuff for them.

Yeah, but I'm an AR snob lol I only buy certain parts from certain companies.

Can't blame you there. Some of the stuff I've seen at the shows...shooo.

I can't imagine what some of the cheap-o stuff you see online looks like when it shows up.

Larue? Noveske? Daniel Def? Bravo Co? Hardcore Colt devotee? Other?

Where does your snobbishness most reside?

Typically it's the specs more than the manufacturer for some things and the manufacturer for others. Proper MPI and HPT bolts made out of Carpenter 158 (although the HPT is not an absolute for me since it can decrease the lifespan of the bolt). I can stake gas keys myself so that's not something I look into greatly. An attempt is nice though. I've bought the Palmetto State Premium line, Brownells and BCM and had zero problems with them. Just as long as they meet minimum specs.

Barrels I like FN hammer forged and their Machine Gun Steel. BCM and Noveske barrels are top notch as well. DD barrels are okay, but I didn't have good luck with the single one I owned. White Oaks stainless barrels are tops, but hard to get. MPI as a minimum, HPT preferred on all barrels.

H buffer as a minimum, but have used H2s depending on the situation/setup. Mil-spec sized receiver extensions, preferably manufactured out of 7076. But I've been known to use 6061 in builds with no problems. 5.56 chambers, but will accept a .223 Wylde depending on situations. Love ALG Defense and Geissele triggers, although the Palmetto basic FCG isn't bad at all. And that new Wilson Combat drop in is pretty nice, although not positive I would want to move away from Geissele for my precision triggers.

BUIS are generally Troy, but have found the Magpul MOE sights are perfectly acceptable and work as intended. RDS only EOTech and Aimpoint. Period, end of story. Magnified scopes I'm a little more lenient on and my go to optic is a Vortex for the moment.

Stocks are Magpul and B5 Systems. Magazines I'm kind of lenient on and have a mix of Magpul M2, Lancer L5AWM, mil surplus (mix and match), D&H aluminum and Elander stainless steel. Muzzle devices...hard to say. The PWS FCS is pretty awesome. The BCM Gunfighter works okay. The Yankee Hill Machine Phantom is pretty good. But really, the A2 isn't as bad as folks let on.

And BCM Gunfighter charging handles, Mod 4, nothing else touches my weapons. Rails I tend to like the Midwest Industries line for both free float and drop in.

If I had a single brand(s) of gear I would say I would go towards it would be BCM, Magpul, Midwest Industries and ALG Defense. Colt I trusted my life to and would recommend it without hesitation, but the problems they face is the fact they are very slow to adapt to changing market conditions and have gotten passed by from companies like DD, BCM, Noveske, Sig Sauer and even smaller outfits like Rainier Arms and Larue. I like the price point on Palmetto State, but having to piece together different parts to get what I want is a pain. But sometimes I can save a bundle.

I used mostly BCM for my important components for my build. All the companies you named are all good. But one you're missing is Knights Armament. The SR-15 is one of the best rifles I've fired/owned

Oh, certainly. The SR-15 is the pinnacle in AR design as far as I'm concerned.

Have you messed with the AR Gold and/or JP triggers at all? Obviously it's pretty much impossible to go wrong with a Geissele but I know there's some pretty devout followers of those two options. At this point I have no personal experience with either.

No, can't say I know much about the others.

Those American Trigger folks have some serious names behind them though. Chip McCormick, Ken Hackathorn and Jerry Mickulek are some big names.

Depends on how you use the rifle. If it's for general all-purpose use, the AR Gold is a quality trigger.

The Geissele Hi Speed trigger is probably the finest available for precision shooting.

For practical rifle competition where a crisp one stage trigger is normally preferred, the JP fire control group is about as good as it gets.

Which Eotech, do you recommend for general use, and plinking on a colt AR

512 would work as well as anything. Runs from $360-$425 depending on where you buy it. Runs on AA batteries, no night vision, just a bare bones EOTech that should be fine.

Thoughts on the Sig 551A1? I have an opportunity to get one at a great price.

Pretty decent rifle for the most part, especially if it has the stamped Swiss pattern receiver. Only problem you run into is it takes proprietary magazines which typically run around $40 and north of there.

For that reason, it's not easy to flip a rifle like that later on. But a decent shooter nonetheless.

Just to kick it around consider something like the Aimpoint Pro. Should cost you roughly the same amount of money. Some prefer the Eotech reticle but the Aimpoint's battery life is insane, like 30k hours or more.

Check them both out and see what you think.

Will do
Is the Aimpoint also a double AA battery I like the idea of using them vs. a special lithium
