Just from an aspect of becoming comfortable with the safety

If you get a 1911, I would suggest getting into finding a local IPSC competition and giving it a try to get more comfortable. You quickly learn how to manipulate the 1911 safety when drawing from a holster while on your way to presentation.

If you go into the comps as a training opportunity and a chance to hone your skills, you get more out of them.

Good advice but I'd suggest IDPA over ISPC.

Just from an aspect of becoming comfortable with the safety

Do you want a safety or not want a safety? Now "personally" outside some specific platforms (I'm looking at you 1911) I don't much care for safeties. The safety is supposed to be the shooter. The 1911 has a very short/light trigger compared to almost everything else but that does really lend itself to having a safety. (two when one considers the grip safety) OTOH that trigger makes a good 1911 just about the easiest thing to shoot accurately for most people. (at least in my experience) Most other triggers are heavier and pretty much all will have a good deal more travel.

If you're considering carrying though make sure it's something you're actually willing to carry or you defeat the purpose. I've known a number of people who picked up weapons they liked and shot well but were bigger than they wanted to carry so they simply didn't. (or had to make another purchase of something else...not that there's anything wrong with that :))

I wish ACOG didn't charge a whole rifle's cost to have one though. I understand the cost of optics but when you can drop a 1k+ (depending on model) on a 3x scope it just makes me twitchy.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the price, but we used them in the military and I got pretty good with it.

Anyone in here have an sks with a recoil buffer? I've went back and forth on getting one. Traditionalists hate then where as others swear by them.

Just picked up a Remington 700 in 30-06. I figure a bolt action 30-06 is a necessity for any gun collection.
