The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Just moved to Chattanooga and thinking about going to do some shooting at the range in Prentice Cooper State Forest. Anybody shot there before?

CCW suggestions under $500? I can get a good deal on Glocks and have thought about a 26 or 27.

Concealabilify and weight wise, an air light titanium hammer less. 38 special is perfect for a carry weapon. A glock is to big to carry IMO. A pocket .38 is perfect.

I am also cheap, so buying a weapon for carrying and everyday plinking or range time is also a must for me as well. So get what you like.....

Go to a show, or a large enough shop and pick up every damn thing in sight you think you could manage to carry. You'd be surprised how different things can fit your hand.

That's how I ended up with a Taurus G2 that I frigging love. Would've never really given the gun a 2nd look, but happened to pick one up and it fit like a glove.

Spent some time in Sportsman's today. The Glock 26/27 felt decent. Grip is on the wide side for such a compact gun. The Glock 19 felt better with the longer grip. Really liked the feel of the XDs. Still going to try some more out first.

Don't be a Glock fan boy. Buy a 1911 and practice a TON with it. They are slim and easy to carry, whether full size or commander. If the weight bothers you, opt for aluminum frame. You could spend anywhere from 700-5000$ on one.

Or a sig p238. It is a .380 on a mini 1911 frame. Perfect weapon and is as nice as all get out.

Not being a "fan boy" is an asinine reason to avoid a gun.

A good design is a good design.

I would personally chose an m&p, HK USP, XD, 1911, 226, 229, over a GLock. Not a 92fs though. I would also prefer a high power .

When it comes to a carry weapon, personal defense. Why a .45? I love the 1911 frame, the 226 not a fan of the XD.

I just like the classic look of the 1911 and the history behind it. It's just beautiful and it packs a punch. I'm not a huge fan of the XD either, but I'd chose it over a GLock, it fits better in my hand and I'm more accurate with it compared to the GLock. The 1911 I carry is more reliable or at least as reliable as a GLock.

Why are some folks against carrying a .380? I don't quite understand. I have a Bersa Thunder .380 and I would NOT want to get hit with that thing..

Listen you un-Murican person you!

You will love the .45! Love it because nothing says 'MURICA more than 7-9 rounds of freedom zipping through that masterpiece John Moses Browning designed!

In all seriousness though, for CCW and short barrel lengths that typically come on them, I'd stick with a 9mm. .45 and .40 isn't going to offer you much more ballistically, but at the cost of significantly increased recoil especially in polymer framed pistols. .380 isn't as good terminal ballistics wise, so 9mm should be where you start and end your search.

Personal opinions, but as Wally said, get what's comfortable and what you can train with.

Lack of penetration. It's all well and good if you can hit center mass each and every time and you should (might) reach a critical organ. But should and might only works against paper targets.

With 9mm and above, it has the velocity and weight to carry past barriers like hands and arms along the way. In a perfect world, your target will stand still and puff their chest out. In the real world, you get to deal with them holding up their arms, being behind glass, furniture and other things that will significantly slow down and even stop rounds under a 9mm ballistics.

I'll carry a .380 a lot during the summer.

I've gotten enough rounds through it that I trust it and can get several rounds on center mass in a short amount of time when drawing from the little pocket holster I carry it in. I think various companies have come far enough with the ballistics of that round that I'm ok with it, especially when every one is in summer clothes.

When its hot, its nice to be able to carry in my work scrubs, basketball shorts, etc.

I realize the ballistics are far from perfect, but it goes back to the whole 'best gun you can carry is the one you WILL carry' thing.

You're just not man enough to carry a .460 Smith in your basketball shorts... :)
