The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Listen you un-Murican person you!

You will love the .45! Love it because nothing says 'MURICA more than 7-9 rounds of freedom zipping through that masterpiece John Moses Browning designed!

In all seriousness though, for CCW and short barrel lengths that typically come on them, I'd stick with a 9mm. .45 and .40 isn't going to offer you much more ballistically, but at the cost of significantly increased recoil especially in polymer framed pistols. .380 isn't as good terminal ballistics wise, so 9mm should be where you start and end your search.

Personal opinions, but as Wally said, get what's comfortable and what you can train with.

Yes sir, I'm running out today to get another .45....

I do have my eye on the Sig Tac Ops, still kick myself for passing on a Remington .45, new $475. Just been an expensive summer with kid getting married and now daughters tuition about due.

I'll stick to my LC9 as my daily accessory and LCP for swimwear.

Why are some folks against carrying a .380? I don't quite understand. I have a Bersa Thunder .380 and I would NOT want to get hit with that thing..

The biggest problem with the .380 is that these days you can get a weapon that carries 9mm in .380 sizes. Given the option I'd much prefer the 9mm to the .380.

However, .380 beats the hell out of harsh language. Understand that lesser calibers rely more heavily on bullet performance so don't go cheap. Gold Dots are always a pretty safe bet. I don't have it in front of me but there was a big test of .380 ammo recently and IIRC several rounds of different manufacture based on the Hornady 90gr XTP bullet did very well.

Found article. You can weight the parameters as you see fit but it's a good guide.

You will not go wrong with that Tac Ops. Best out of the box 1911 that's not custom you can get.

Save your pennies, it's worth it.

You're just not man enough to carry a .460 Smith in your basketball shorts... :)

Ha! I have little doubt some tool somewhere has done that just to prove a point.

Guy showed up at my carry class with a .50AE Desert Eagle. Proceeded to LOSE HIS MIND when the instructor explained how many rounds he had to shoot to qualify. Thankfully 3 minutes into the spat with the teacher he dropped a " DATS BULL****, YO!" so instructor just told him to go up front, get his money back, and leave.

Those Kimbers are works of art. Too bad they're made in NY. I have a Colt 1911 and would love to have a Kimber too.

Spent some time in Sportsman's today. The Glock 26/27 felt decent. Grip is on the wide side for such a compact gun. The Glock 19 felt better with the longer grip. Really liked the feel of the XDs. Still going to try some more out first.

Let us know what you get!

Springfield 1911 or GTFO

(IMO)

I've had three Springers in my time. Two of which are now gone.

Mil-Spec 1911A1 that ran okay. Sold it because I was short on money.

Stainless 1911A1 that ran like **** and was told by the Springfield customer service rep "just put a couple hundred more rounds through it and it should break in" after I'd put over 500 already. Dropped it like a bad habit.

Champion Operator that runs okay that I got in a trade that I probably would never have bought. I'd prefer it in a non-railed platform, but it works okay.

Hit and miss on the QC IMO. Their customer service had gotten better over the years, but I wasn't impressed by the answer "you get what you pay for and if you wanted something that ran out of the box, you should have bought Model X." (almost a direct quote over the issues I had with the stainless model)

Best customer service in the business, along with Wilson IMO. Top 2 or three custom shop if you ever want to have work done to your gun.

You did read the quote I got from their customer service department in regards to a 1911 that had about 800 rounds through it...right?

From the Springfield Armory Customer Service to be specific. "Well, we know there are problems with the slide and frame mating on the 1911A1 GI style and it generally takes a bit of shooting to break in. Just the kinds of problems one will encounter when you buy our basic line. Normally we'd say if you've fired a thousand rounds and it hasn't gone away we'll take a look at it. Otherwise, our Loaded models run pretty good out of the box and that's really the starting point we suggest when buying a 1911 model."

Maybe I got the one jackwagon that didn't last long at the CS desk, but that left a real bad taste in my mouth.

That seems odd, I've had a loaded that tan great and have dealt with their custom shop before and they treated me well. Anything can happen, however they are known for customer service and custom shop work.

It was back in 2006, 2007 if I recall so I'd assume they have gotten better since.

So far I haven't needed custom shop work for my Sig 1911s. They run so great out of the box it eliminates the need to improve perfection :)

I've heard good things about their custom shop. But I've got a local guy that used to work for Nighthawk Custom before he moved to OKC and became a head gunsmith for a LGS. If I need work, he's the go to guy and does outstanding work.

ETA: I know there were more than a few problems with the mating of the Imbel frames to the American made slides. I just got unlucky I suppose.

I'm planning on purchasing a S&W 9mm Shield to carry. Any pros or cons from you guys?

Decent reviews from most who own one. Work with a guy who's carried one for about 4 months now. Said its 'perfectly acceptable'. Nothing groundbreaking or amazing, just a decent, reliable, average pistol (which for the price is exactly what it should be).

Same advice I'd give anybody...try it on and try it out.

See if the shop will let you try it on with whatever type of holster you plan on using. Shoot one if you get a chance.

Has anyone ever seen or fired the Detonics MTX? It is going to be the US Army's official hand gun in a short time.

Detonics MTX

The Detonic MTX looks like a fancy 1911, but the devil is in the details. Both the grip and the top end can be swapped out for different sizes and lengths roughly analogous with with full-size, commander, and officer length 1911s, but the differences are what set the pistol apart, starting with the design of the grip.

The pistol uses double-stack STI 2011 magazines (in 10/12/14 round configurations), and packs them into a grip narrower than a 1911 frame with the wooden grips attached, at an entirely different grip angle. Without going into the science of the design of the grip, it is obviously undercut both front and rear, and creates a much lower bore axis and much lower felt recoil. Shots fired from an MTX in .45 ACP feel more akin to shooting a soft 9mm, and the pistol comes back on target faster for follow up shots. The single-action design and relatively conventional 1911 style upper with a match-grade barrel and trigger lends the gun to very accurate shooting… and we’re not done with the modularity of the system.

The “S” in the STX part of the system stands for striker-fired, and holds several patents involving the grip and the striker system.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't fired one, but my son has one and I really like the size for a carry. So I've handled it and checked the fit. My son said he likes it pretty well, but he likes the XDS better. Since the XDS is over $150 more I figured the Shield would fit the bill.
