The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

M1A compares pretty decently to the SCAR 17, at about half the price.

Had an M1A Loaded and traded it off during the craziness after New Haven. Got an Rock River AR and Italian marked Beretta 92 in trade that I flipped for cash.

I don't have sellers remorse that much so to speak, but I do miss that Springfield. Sweetest shooter I had and accurate as all get out.

I've thought about getting an M1A and selling my AR. What did you like/dislike about it compared to the AR platform?

I wouldn't say I disliked anything really. I mean, if you are going for the standard model, it is a musket with that 22 inch barrel. So that for me was likely the biggest complaint, as minor as it is. Other than that, I'd say the biggest difference is the price on aftermarket parts. The words "cheap" and "M1A parts" have never collided in the same sentence before. Same goes with the CMI mags which tend to be the best quality. Generally they are around $25 or so for each. Rails? Good luck finding anything worth a darn that's cheap.

If you are looking at an out of the box shooter that you never plan to modify outside of the cheek riser that would be required with a scope (and trust me, it's criminal not to scope a higher end M1A) it's not a bad choice. I just wanted some commonality in parts since i had a bunch of AR parts so I went with the AR-10.

It's a great shooter that handles well and naturally aims. Manual of arms takes some getting used to if you've played with the AR FOW for any significant time. But isn't unnatural like an AK.

TEOTWAWKI rifle? Maybe. Hunting rifle? Absolutely. Weekend can blaster? Yep. Other than the overall length and pricey aftermarket parts, there's not a lot of downside to an M1A or even an LRB.

Would like to add LRB arms to the list of M14 clone options. As well as Smith enterprises.
Those are pretty much the pinnacle of the platform.

It was Smith who built the crazy horse m14's for the 2nd ID

First go to the nearest place with as wide a selection as possible and have her handle all of them that you think suitable. The more comfortable it is in her hand and the more intuitively it points the better she'll likely shoot it. If it comes down to she likes X, Y & Z and you still want some input come on back and we'll see what's left.

If you're certain it could wind up a carry piece that trims things down somewhat.

This is excellent advice.

Smith was the other manufacturer I couldn't think of.

There are still a few Norinco models floating around. And they generally got decent reviews for weekend shooters.

True about the Norincos although most better gunsmiths refuse to work on them. Polytechs however are of good quality, the receiver just needs to be re-hardened and the bolt replaced.
Although this is only for people that shoot heavily. The average shooter will never notice.
Gunny Fisher the man responsible for the DMR m14 posts over on the m14tfl.com forum. He's a wealth of knowledge.

Honestly, I wouldn't bet my life on one of the Chinese imports. The Springer sure. Likely the LRB and Smith since they get good reviews.

I'm just skeptical of any rifles from Norinco or Polytech that isn't an AK or SKS.

The poly's are good when totally rebuilt and re-heated.
I've looked at the current offerings from SA and I'm far from impressed. I'd opt for a smith or lrb. Considering you'd basically have to gut the SA to get any decent accuracy out of it. Again, casual shooters would never notice the pitfalls of these rifles, for the novice m14 owner perhaps the SA would be the way to go, I'm picky.
I personally have a pre ban SA that was rebuilt with all usgi parts. As we'll as a lrb built by smith enterprises as a crazy horse. The m14 and m1 garand rifles are my passion.

I'd rather not have to rebuild anything out of the box personally. Which is why I rant and rave against lower level ARs all the time. (Bushmaster comes immediately to mind)

My Loaded model was a tack driver out off the shelf (bought it used, less than 200 rounds fired) and served well with everything I fed it save some Indian surplus. And that was the ammo more than the rifle. It especially loved 168 grain Hornady TAP-FPD. If I buy another, I'd get another Loaded model.

Here's my daughter's target, she's 7...and shot the S&W 622

I think she did awesome....on the second magazine she was aiming for the eyeball and put one in there. When she hit it the guy in the lane next to us (he was blasting away with a .45) but stepped over and watched her, and gave her a big high five...She was pumped

we're going back today with my son, sister and brother-in-law, but my son (9) isn't as excited..

Nah, I have what I need and little more at this point.

me too, but I've got a hankering for a 10mm, probably a Kimber and the Kimber Warrior .45..

I looked at the Warrior yesterday and it's sweet...neither shop in Clarksville had a 10mm for me to look at...

So I'll keep looking, till I finally breakdown...

Gonna have to spend some time with the .380...this was the first time shooting it, and the magazine would come unseated...

So I've got to figure that out and get it fixed...

I had a Kahr where the magazine release was situated in such a way that under recoil I could pop the mag. Not all the time but not something I could live with in a possible carry weapon.
