The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Yall see the new Barrett 240LW?

That thing is a fatty that needs to drop weight. I like where Barrett is going with it, but no matter what, the infantry needs a GP MG that doesn't weigh over 20 pounds.

I got to fondle an HK 21 once and was thoroughly impressed. I know spare parts commonality and all was forefront in the thinking of adopting the 240B, but the HK 21 should have replaced the M-60.

Yeah, a good, lightweight, medium machine gun would be incredibly beneficial to those that have to hump the thing around all day on a foot patrol, on top of ammo.

A shame they don't have lightweight SMAW rockets either. That would have helped me out a ton.

Speak of ARs. The ATF is reclassifying M855 ammo and taking it off the exempt list:

Skip to page 14 for where it starts. But if you want a case, best buy it now.

You know what's sad? They will beat us to death with that "sporting purpose" clause.

Not a single firearm I have, nor the ammo has a sporting purpose. For the record, I do not intend on giving them one. I'm really getting sick of these bums.

Do you guys ever use WD 40 to clean guns? Also, what is the best lubricant for shotguns or bolt action?

I'm not fond of WD-40 as it leaves a lot of residue behind.

I use the same lube for everything in my arsenal. Synthetic motor oil, 5W-40.

How in the world did you stumble upon that? That seems like it would be too harsh on the components.

Got it from a gunsmith years ago. Being that ammonia is a natural degreaser, it works to strip away the oil and carbon build up.

I've used it for years and never had a problem. Even on polymer components.

Do you think Rem Oil does an ok job for cleaning and lube?

I honestly don't think one is "better" than the other personally. Rem Oil, Break Free, Hopps, etc are generally around the same. I'm not a huge fan of Frog Lube as I think it is/was just the latest craze and didn't work any better than what came before. Same thing to an extent with Fireclean, although that has me intrigued.

But at $6-8 a quart for synthetic motor oil that's worked like a champ for me, I find it hard to change to something else that ends up being the same price and only a fraction. And a quart will last a long time. I'm not saying it's best, just that it's worked for me and I don't feel the need to change.

So let's say you are cleaning an ar-15, would you let the bolt group soak in windex for a while or spray as you scrape off the carbon?

The latter.

Biggest misconception about the AR is it has to be squeaky clean to operate. I wipe the loose stuff off, clean with a brush, dry, oil, repeat.

Pretty good synopsis, especially on the frog lube. People swear by it but I think a lot of times they're justifying the $$ in their own mind.

The main thing is just to clean them...don't get bogged down in brands. And avoid the nasty ammo if you can.

All that said, I'm a bit of an AK nerd and if you want to read some funny stuff, read some of the threads online about cleaning AKs. Some funny stories.

The best thing for the bolt group on an AR is brake cleaner.

I use windex when shooting corrosive ammo, works like a charm. Mostly on mausers and my ak's

Main oil for me is militech 1 and militech 1 grease. Normally use shooters choice for bore cleaner and sweets 7.62 every 4th cleaning or so.

M1's and m14's get heavy ball bearing grease.
