I wouldn't mind finding a decent one locally that I could look over before buying. We used the demilled ones on our drill team when I was in high school. I'm old enough to appreciate that precision of American industry now.
Indeed. Just be mindful of the cut off numbers for the early ones. Past 800k for Springfield and past 285k for rock island. Heat treatment was off if I recall correctly from Hatchers Notebook.
Edit.
The above is for 1903 rifles only, all 1903A3 are fine.
Most of the A3s I've seen for sale have been utter garbage, despite the conditions listed on Armslist and others. Seriously eroded and pitted barrels, actions/furniture that have been seriously abused and neglected and mismatched parts. Or been converted to the Sporter types.
Or someone knows exactly what they have and the price they can charge lol
Yeah, a lot of them were used by the VFW halls and went through a ton of blanks without being properly cleaned afterwards.
The cmp has the occasional 03 or 03A3 pop up for sale as they receive VFW returns from time to time. I can keep my eye out for a nice one for you, and drop you a message here if you'd like. I live about 45 mins away from their facility. I go there from time to time.
This wouldn't be a strawman purchase as you'd have to submit paperwork, and the cmp will ship the rifle directly to you after background check. I would only be selecting the rifle. Same goes for M1 Garands, although the pickings are slim these days. Prices will be much better than your run of the mill shop or individual.

well, snapped grip screw head off, changing grips yesterday
so back to the gunsmith
pisses me off, I bought hex head Wilson combat grip screws, so I wouldn't have to deal with the flat head screwdriver, slipping and buggering up the old screw heads
Hmm, I'm trying to remember how I did it myself.
You could try a scratch awl or a knife point in between the gaps in the outer screw and back it up a bit to be able to get the pliers to bite.
I bought my son a 22LR Henry. Love those rifles. Was the 44-40 also a pistol round or was it solely a rifle round?
Both. 44-40 is right up there with the 30-30 for number of deer kills over the years. However, I'd hate to see the number of lost animals as a result of the 44-40.
Gonna put the first rounds through the 1860 this Saturday hopefully.
