The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Sox pick up Ortiz option for next year. Theo said he expects Beltre, Varitek, V-Mart, & Hall to hit FA. People in Boston believe Theo will go after Crawford hard to add him with Ells in the outfield. Also the Padres GM said today he doesnt expect Adrian Gonzalez to be apart of the team in 2012, he said either Gonzalez will be traded or hit FA.

If Lee doesn't end up in Pinstripes, expect a free-for-all for Crawford.

Eh. Worth a shot, obviously they feel that Curt Young can get Miller's command figured out. He is out of options so they must think it will be something that can be fixed before opening day.

Epstein said today they will try to re-sign V-Mart & Beltre, off course that's just GM talk.

I agree with the GM talk. Both are type A, and can be replaced at a similar level for a lot less time with folks like John Buck. I believe letting Martinez go is a sign that the club is confident that Ryan Lavarnway will be ready for a roster expansion call up next fall.

As to Beltre, I'd be afraid of a longer deal, as he has been wildly inconsistant.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com report the Red Sox are open to trading Scutaro for the right part and that multiple teams are showing interest. Jed Lowrie would take over at shortstop if the Sox trade Scutaro, with the team presumably strengthening another area.

I wouldn't mind seeing this happen, Lowrie has proven that he can be an everyday contributor, and I get the feeling that the club would like to keep Yamaico Navarro around as a spell guy at 2B/SS/3B.

There is a ton of MIF talent coming down the chute in the organization, may as well parlay Scutaro into some help elsewhere on the roster.

Red Sox are showing "real" interest in Justin Upton, according to sources. Apparently the price is a "kings ransom" at this point but the interest seems real.

Personally I'd be surprised, as Upton has a knack for being hurt, and his plate discipline is lacking...That said, he's only 23 and has a boatload of room to grow with his physical ability, and his contract is long term and pretty reasonable, especially if he can continue to improve.

We needed a hitter who can hit lefties. I am sure he will be a solid pickup if he stays healthy.

I agree. He'll be fine, though his age might be a concern if he keeps catching regularly. Calculated gamble by the Sox on this one, but they seem to like how Saltalamacchia has been working out. He won't be Martinez but he should be fine.

Tigers will use him at DH. They like Avila at catcher. Avila just cannot hit for crap.

His age does not concern me when he just hit .300 with 20+ HR.
