The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

The deal is basically done, all were waiting on is for Theo & Gonzo to work out a contract extension. The Sox will give up Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Rey Fuentes, & a player to be named later.

That will be HUGE for Theo to be able to get Gonzalez withouth giving up Kalish, Iglesias, Ellsbury, or Bard.

Boston media are also saying Theo is trying to get Crawford or Werth & add 2 more arms to the bullpen, of course the hot names out there would be Downs & Fuentes.

Adrian Gonzalez has passed his physical with the Red Sox & they now have until tomorrow at 2pm to get a deal done for Gonzalez for the trade to go through.

What does this do for signing Beltre?

Youk is too good in the field ( as is Beltre ) too just be a DH.

Could they just revolve the DH between Gonzo/Youk/Beltre?

If we get the contract settled with Gonzalez then we wont sign Beltre, they will use the money to sign Crawford or Werth then either Downs or Fuentes.

Looks like the trade wont happen now, they could'nt get a contract negotiated & they had until 2pm today to do it. Once again Theo fails.

Meh. If the dollars weren't right no biggie. Need to be careful with the first big deal. Odds are he wanted a very long deal, I am with the club on this one.

A big deal with Adrian could mean jeopardizing the chance at others or missing them completely. Can't fault Theo for that.

I wouldn't jump the gun yet. Mixed reports are filing in from everywhere.

Clearly indications don't look good, but anything is possible.

Bostons new nickname, the CheapSox. I'm done with Theo. The front office does'nt care about the Sox. All they care about now is their new baby soccer team. Screw the whole front office & money saving GM.

The idea of having Gonzalez was great, but the fact is that deals of that length rarely end up working well for the club. I think Theo did well on this one, and I have been the first to take issue with many of his choices.

This management team is a joke. We give Theo so much credit for 2004/2007, but, in reality, 2004 was Duquette's team. 2007 was a fluke. Theo's failures have outweighed his successes as he "bargain hunts" for scrapheap detritus, and overpays for questionable talent (Lackey/Drew/Lugo/Renteria). We can give a bum like Drew 75 mil over 5 years but can't commit to 8 years with one of the best players in baseball? This is why the Yankees win and we'll be also-rans for the next decade. Too much value placed on unproven prospects, no balls when it comes to pulling the trigger on PROVEN talent. We'll lose out on Beltre, too, and, when Spring rolls around, we'll have an unproven catcher, an outfield that looks like it crawled out of a MASH unit (Cameron/Drew), an in-field by committee, and a bullpen of other team's throwaways. Meanwhile, the Yankees will get Lee, Crawford, and spend money the Red Sox have. Hope Henry's wife likes her new "toy" football team.

When proven talent takes it's paycheck to the bank and mails it it, or has an early decline, the $$ stays on the books.

The "Writing the check for whatever the best available guy wants" method has worked well over the years for the Mets, hasn't it?

If you really need to piss and moan about spending, ***** about Tampa or Pittsburgh. They put $160m on the field last season, for Christ's sake.

Just cause we didn't get Gonzo doesn't mean we cant make some moves to be more competitive.

Like I said earlier, I'd rather have Beltre back with Crawford in he mix.

Is it even official that the deal has fallen through? I have heard several different things and last I heard was that they may do the trade and then do an extension after the start of the seaon.

I wouldn't get too excited about Crawford, with the deal that Werth signed today. Another case of someone looking for 7-8 years.

Arte Moreno seems to be more willing to tie that money up over the better part of a decade than the powers that be in Boston.

Well, they are going to have to offer those type of contract if they ever want to sign a big-time free agent again.

Also, maybe they are going to make a run at Prince or Albert after the season ( if they aren't signed to an extension by then ).

Wil be interesting to see what is done...

I was just looking at a few lists, and he caught my eye as well.

The Boston Red Sox on Sunday completed a deal for San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez that earlier in the day appeared in jeopardy, major league sources told FOXSports.com.

The Padres received right-handed starter Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, center fielder Reymond Fuentes and a player to be named later, a source said.

Kelly, Rizzo and Fuentes are all prospects who have yet to debut in the major leagues.

The deal appeared to have hit a wall when the sides struggled to meet a deadline for a long-term extension with Gonzalez. According to a source, Gonzalez "turned down a lot of money because he wanted more, and the window closed."

Major League Baseball had approved a negotiating window.

Gonzalez, 28, is set to earn $6.3 million in the final year of his current contract, which is viewed throughout the industry as a bargain — one reason he seems motivated to get a big-dollar deal now.
