The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Nice 3 game sweep, hopefully things start going a little smoother.

Good time for some Pedro material, love this man, miss him on the Red Sox so much. Some of my favorite Red Sox experiences involved Pedro.

This is video from the 100th Anny game, last couple minutes are great when he talks about drilling Soriano and Jeter

Probably my favorite Pedro article, long read, but its awesome, talks a lot about the '99 playoff game with the tribe

Bullpen almost blew the game last night too, Rich Hill is suppose to be called up tomorrow. I'd expect Justin Thomas to get sent down.

Lars Anderson is getting the start in LF tonight against the White Sox. Doubront is on the hill for us, I've liked the way he has pitched his first 2 starts. Hopefully he can pitch well again tonight & keep this momentum going for us.

Carl Crawford will miss atleast 3 months & will possibly need a procedure on his elbow.

Oh look, another pathetic contract that Theo gave out. This is getting beyond pathetic.

You can halfway blame the Nationals for overpaying Werth and getting Crawford even more.

About time Youk....this is what should happen against former Met first round draft picks, not perfect games

Need to wrap this up and get Felix his first win, he deserves it.

Now back to watching Belichick win the NFL draft, I'm loving tonight!

This should be making Felix's 3rd win but our BP blew his first 2 starts. I really like Doubronts potential. He just needs to work deeper into games.

Didn't know you were a Pats fan too Iona!?

Im not excited about our picks, we continue to neglect that big problem which is the secondary. Wish they would sign or draft a DB that could lock a WR down. We've had the worst secondary 3 years in a row.

Born and raised in New England, rep my Boston teams in all professional sports lol

Pats are gonna be ridiculous next year, me and you could play in the secondary and get a ring, Bill ain't playing around anymore!

They only have 2 more picks tomorrow, I would expect they go with some DBs. Harrison Smith seems too obvious I wonder if he'll still be on the board.

Guess not, San Fran scooped him up

Harrison Smith just came off the board, Vinings took him at 29.

I'm a HUGE Boston Sports fan too. Lol. How did you become a Vols fan though?

I won't get excited about this team until they fix the secondary.

Hah I know right, step dad is from outside Knoxville, moved there when I was younger for a year in like 92, but still have family/friends there we visit. Got me hooked on UT and I love college sports besides. It was perfect timing, right as I was getting into sports, then Peyton came along. Always had to explain how I was a Pats, but had that soft spot for #18 haha.

No one is running the ball on them next year, healthy arrington, mccourty and dowling plus chung, gregory and a decent rookie at safety and they are looking good.

@Ken_Rosenthal: #RedSox have sent down LHP Justin Thomas, presumably to clear a spot for LHP Rich Hill.

Yessir, bullpen just got a lot better! What a performance from Tazawa last night too, hopefully he earned some confidence with that outing.

Any chance Cook throws out of the pen and takes Albers role? Or maybe slide him in to the rotation to give Buchholz a chance to get it together, because he has been the worst of the starting 5 so far.

Gotta do something with Cook soon

Trading him for a legit bullpen arm would be best case IMO. As well as he has been throwing, I think we need to keep it in perspective and realize he is a nice fill-in/placeholder option and not much more. He is not a better option than Buchholz, Dubrount, Bard at their best, but in the event of injury (or Buchholz sucking) he fills a need very well for a short time. I could actually see them letting him walk if the bullpen starts to straighten out and Dice-K pitches well in rehab.

• White Sox lefty Matt Thornton, who has pitched well against righthanders in his career, could be a good bullpen pickup for the Red Sox. He is signed for $5.5 million this season and $5.5 million in 2013, however. There's also a $1 million buyout for 2014 or a $6 million team option.

• Seems hard to believe that at this time in 2010 there was open speculation whether the Red Sox should release David Ortiz.

• It was interesting to see literally the entire team watching some funny clips on MLB Network before batting practice on Thursday. Meanwhile Josh Beckett has taken to playing cards with teammates before games and Dustin Pedroia has swapped cribbage with Terry Francona for "Words With Friends" against Adrian Gonzalez.

I'm not here to tell you that the clubhouse is a model of togetherness. But this group does seem to be coming together a lot better in the last two weeks.

• The level of respect the hitters have for batting coach Dave Magadan reminds me a lot of Kevin Long with the Yankees. Cody Ross has already said Magadan is the best hitting coach he has ever had. No matter who became manager, Magadan was staying on the staff.

• There was little reaction to the Carl Crawford news by the players. And, really, why should there be? The Red Sox had the best offense in the game last season with Crawford contributing little. The same is true this year. There is empathy for his issues, but certainly no feeling of there being something to replace.

• If the Red Sox want Bobby Valentine to feel more comfortable, they should let him do his pre-game media sessions in the dugout or in his office. The interview room at Fenway makes it feel like the manager is being put on trial every day and you can tell he doesn't like it. He's a different person on the road.

• Mike Aviles has hit probably seven balls this season that Jose Iglesias couldn't match if he hit the ball, picked it up and hit it again. The kid is hitting .206/.295/.221 with one extra-base hit in 68 at-bats at Pawtucket. He's only 22, but clearly this is a long-term project offensively.

• You have to feel for Ryan Kalish. If not for injuries he would have played a ton in right field last season and would be playing center field this season. He's still down in the Fort rehabbing his shoulder.

• Personality has nothing to do with performance. But it's amazing how quickly Ross has fit in and is well-liked by everybody around the team. Ryan Sweeney is a quieter person but he seems to be enjoying himself a lot, too.

• Props to Felix Doubront's wife and two boys, who braved the cold to watch him pitch last night. It was not a good night for watching baseball.

• Rich Hill will join the team today and Justin Thomas is off to Pawtucket. That's one step to fix the bullpen but others remain. In his first year as GM, Ben Cherington will be judged more on the moves he makes now as opposed to over the winter.

Also here is a good article on the Crawford signing, I agree w/ Mazz on this one....

I agree with what he said in regards to building the team like he isn't there. Act as if you are going to get literally no production from him so you still have a competitive team. Anything he contributes is a plus, but you aren't counting on it. That sucks to say, and sure he's the most expensive complimentary piece ever, but that would be better then relying on him and getting what they have last year and this year.

He is never going to get a fair shake again in Boston, his fate is sealed with the media and the public, so to count on him would be more foolish than the amount of money they originally paid him. For the record, I'm a fan and think he can still be effective over the next few years. But its pretty clear he is never living up to that deal, lesson learned, the hard way.

Hey, hindsight is 20/20. I wish they could take back Lackey and Crawford's contracts, could really use that money going forward. Thankfully they have a bunch of kids ready to step up to the majors soon. Kalish, Middlebrooks, Iglesias, Lavarnway really need to pan out or they could be in a tough spot for a few years. Crazy to say, but Iglesias worries me the most hah
