The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Red Sox just announced they have reached a deal to make John Farrell the new manager in Boston, deal runs through 2015.

Good move by Cherrington IMO.

Now time to start molding the roster.

player going from boston to toronto as compensation was a major leaguer in 2012.

Didn't give up a ton, but I don't get the Farrell infatuation. He met expectations in Toronto.

He understands the pressure/scrutiny that comes w/ managing in Boston, he has a good working relationship w/ the owners & Cherrington, he has the respect of the veteran players on the team (Ortiz, Pedroia, Lester, Buchholz), & when he was in Boston from '07-'10 the pitching staff was one of the best in baseball.

The managerial candidates they interviewd this time were a lot better than last years, couldn't have went wrong w/ Farrell or Ausmus though IMO.

Cherrington has now shifted his focus on signing Ortiz & Ross back. Ortiz is rumored to wanting a 2 year deal worth $25-$30 million.

Sox introduced John Farrell as the new manager today at noon.

Now sources are saying Troy Lovullo will be Farrells bench coach in Boston. He was the manager at Pawtucket before going to Toronto w/ Farrell.

ESPN reporting the Red Sox are close to signing David Ortiz to a 2 year deal, could be announced by Friday.

I hope so. Ortiz, Ross, pitching, 1B, pitching, LF and pitching. They have a lot of work to do this offseason. Going to be interesting to see how they go about it.

I keep reading a lot about Annibel Sanchez, but I am hoping for a trade for a real top of the line starter somehow. Also saw something on SI about Ellsbury for Holland from Texas, wish it was Andrus instead.

lol sarcasm?

Looks a lot more like a Yu Darvish and a lot less like a Dice K IMO. Physically, he's a pretty interesting prospect. If he is willing to head to the minors and work on his craft I think he has a bright future. And he shouldn't cost 100 million, which is always a plus when adding an 18 yr old high school arm.

There's a couple of good Japanese pitcher's this year. I think getting them young and being able to develop them is better than getting a Dice-K or Darvish.

100% agree with the bolded. Who knows how many innings Dice K had on that wing before he came over.

I did read that this kid wasn't even the best prospect this year, but not sure if the other one is eligible this year or next.

Exactly.

You can help get his arm used to the rigors of a Major League schedule. That's a lot easier to teach at 18 than at 25.

On Twitter last night, Ben Badler of BA said something along the lines of, "I'll have an article up soon talking about the best amateur prospect in Japan, and I might even touch on Shohei Otani."

According to Badler’s article:

“Otani has gotten the hype, and while he’s certainly talented, scouts aren’t sold that he’s even the best high school prospect in Japan.”

“The country’s top prep prospect for many evaluators is Shintaro Fujinami, a 6-foot-5 righthander who outperformed Otani at the 18U World Championships in South Korea in late August and early September.”

Badler did say if Otani had been part of the 2012 International signing pool he would not rank as a Top 100 prospect for 2013.
Although I do love my hard throwing pitchers to throw with their eyes closed, that has to count for something extra!

I'd be willing to trade some folks for Ells. For sure. I feel like if this kid has ties to / admires Darvish, he'll be a ranger.

I think it's clearly a three team race as of now with the Dodgers in front with their newfound money spending boner.

I think Boston did some work when they met with him to ease his mind about the transition and starting off in the minors, but I agree that the relationship and familiarity with Darvish could be a big advantage.
