The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Am I correct that it isn't a bidding process this time? Just a straight negotiation? I'm going Dodgers, Sox, Rangers with the Yankees of course being in the picture if they want to be, everyone else trailing at this point.

I think he's an international free agent. maybe the same as Aroldis' process. Arencibiafan might know more.

Otani was drafted #1 by the Nippon Ham yesterday, but he doesn't have to sign with them and can sign with any MLB team at any time. He is a free agent, so no posting fee or anything, just straight open negotiations. However, he is an international free agent, and teams have a limit of $2.9 million to spend on international free agents in 2012-2013. If they go over this, they are subject to taxes and limits the amount of money you can spend in the future on international free agents. So it will be interesting to see how teams attack this and weigh the options of signing him vs. losing out on 2013-2014 top international prospects.

Fujinami was also drafted and he said he will sign and play in Japan to start his career. So he will have to be posted if he wants to play in the MLB

:hi:

Sounds like a little old fashioned game of strategery coming up. I like it.

Red Sox have named Brian Butterfield the 3B coach, Butterfield is from Bangor Maine & has 34 years of professional baseball experience.

He is also a huge Patriots fan, Lol.

Here are the top 10 prospects in the Sox farm system according to Baseball America:

1. SS Xander Bogaerts
2. OF Jackie Bradley
3. RHP Matt Barnes
4. RHP Allen Webster
5. LHP Henry Owens
6. C Blake Swihart
7. 3B Garin Cecchini
8. OF Bryce Brentz
9. SS Jose Iglesias
10. SS Deven Marrero

For those curious, RHP Rubby De La Rosa was not eligible under BA's rules because of his MLB experience. In term of 2013, Iglesias and maybe Brentz or Bradley could impact the Red Sox. Bogaerts turned 20 on Oct. 1 and has played only 23 games in Double A.

The Sox & Ortiz are not close on a deal as of today, they have both agreed on a 2 year deal but there is still a gap in the $. If the Sox can't get him signed by Saturday they are expected to give him a qualifying offer of $13.3 million which is less than the qualifying offer he agreed on last year at $14.75 million.

Also, the Sox have been in negotiations w/ Cody Ross on a deal but Ross is expected to test the open market.

The Sox are also interested in trading for Dan Haren from the Angels.

Bogaerts has a chance to be a beast.

Yep & he is only 20. I'm excited to watch his development.

I'm also excited about Brentz, hoping he can fine a home in Boston. He's from Knoxville, would be cool to see a hometown kid playing at Fenway.

I think he can play all three outfield positions in the bigs and be an impact bat. I like him. Not a star but a really nice bargain guy to have.

I'm not sure of a comp bat wise without forcing it.

@nickcafardo: Red Sox and Ortiz starting to close the large gap they had just 24 hours ago. News of Texas interest, reported by Ken Rosenthal, is real.

I hope this deal gets done quickly so they can move the focus to other needs. Especially since its looking like Ross will test the market.

2 years 26 mill, with incentives possibly taking it to 30 mill. Welcome back Big Papi now go get me some pitching and some outfielders.

Five trades Boston Red Sox would be wise to explore - ESPN Boston

I don't hate any of these ideas except the Cliff Lee part.

Josh Johnson, Michael Morse (1B/OF), Alex Gordon, Derek Holland is how I would rank them as far as personal want/need.

I was watching MLB Tonight last night and one thing that intrigued me was Harold Reynolds threw out the idea that the Sox should consider going after Tulo. Would cost an absolute fortune to get him away from Col obviously, but man, Tulo and Petey up the middle for the next 5+ years, YES PLEASE.

Sox signed catcher David Ross to a 2 year $6.2 mill deal. Very good quality pickup IMO. Looking like either Salty or Lavarnway will be traded at some point.

Some points from a recent podcast with Alex Speier and BA's Jim Callis talking about the Sox top 10 prospects according to BA.

http://audio.weei.co...-jim-callis.htm

-- Bogaerts is a shortstop, has a good chance to stay there even if he maxes out at 6'3 220, .300 30 guy
-- Pure drool-worthy stuff on Bradley's D
-- At different point in the process Barnes and Webster were #2 on the list, and next year Owens can be the top prospect in the system.
-- Barnes better command and peak stuff, but Webster has a better package of pitches. Speier's hears Webster's stuff is better than Barnes.
-- No one in baseball could believe the trade, "Shaking their heads, how did Boston get Webster and DLR?"
-- Cecchini solid D, high BA, high OBP, average power and speed... a lot of Pedroia comps.
-- Britton, Workman, Jacobs, Ranaudo, Johnson are the next group.
-- Who we might see make a huge jump up into the Top 5 next year: Ranaudo (stuff before injury in spring was great), Lin (might be best all around SS in system), Margot (So far away, BUT... talked about in system along lines of Hanley and Bogaerts)
-- Vitek was injured again, but might be time to let him play outfield and concentrate on hitting.
-- Callis says there are not a lot of teams that have farm systems he likes, but the Red Sox are one.
-- Touches on Mercedes, Montas, Buttrey; the Sox just have a ton of high ceiling. "When they hit on guys, they are gonna hit big."

Admittedly I don't know much about this kid Henry Owens, but I like what I read. Hope he isn't the next Andrew Miller.

HS kid in the Sally. Tall lefty built like a drinking straw. Mid 90's fastball with declining velocity as the game progressed. Change-up made hitters look silly when it was on. 2 speeds (low 70's and low 80's) on his curve. Struggled with command of fastball. Showed growth in mound presence as the year went on. Off-speed was too much for low A batters. Numerous mentions of his work ethic, attitude, and charting of pitches in the media down here. When you watch him, you can't help but think 'dear god, what this kid can be'

Also found this article on Brentz, good, quick read with a short video on a couple guys playing in the AFL. I know Brentz is your boy jmoore, definitely hoping to see him continue to develop and play at Fenway, seems to have a great attitude.
