The *OFFICIAL* Brandon Spikes thread (merged)

I don't agree with what Spikes did, in fact it down right dirty, but the reality is that it happens all the time. He just got caught. Unless you've played football you would be surprised what happens on the field, in practice and in the piles after tackles. Some players are just flat out mean and that what makes them great. Al Wilson and Leanord Little were not the most political players on the field, trust me.

I do think he should be suspended for a longer period of time by the SEC, since he got caught. Its not illegal until you get caught.

Here's my prediction....

Florida goes up by 30 by half. CUM leaves Spike's out of the second half and claims after the game at the news conference that he decided to sit him a whole game. Slive slowly appears from the lower region of the camera view (Must have been hiding below CUM's Waist), and praises the coach for his tough decision". ESPN falls for it.

:good!: Football ain't for sissies!!!

i just love how slive is wishing he could suspend CLK, but when it comes to the gators, it's like if he does anything to hurt florida's chances at winning, he'll get aids or something

Blount of Oregon throws a punch that had virtually no chance of inflicting long-term damage and loses his season (and severely hurts his draft stock and possibly loses millions)....

Spikes gouges at the eyes of an opponent (which could have caused significant long-term damage) and loses a half against Vandy.....

I think I respect one of those two coaches, and his boys won't be making the same mistake as their dumb teammate. I have no respect for the other coach, and his boys will see that they can get away with murder as long as they don't do it before an "important" game.

Blowing Vandy out in the fist half would probly mean Spikes would be chillin on the sidelines the second half anyway. Way to lay down the iron fist Urby.

What I don't get is that everyone makes a big deal of how close of friends that Tim tebow and brandon Spikes are. How is that possible? I dislike both fro being Gators but i have a hard time believing "THE LEPER HEALER" would do something like gouging a mans eyes out?

It's not really even a matter of hating Florida. It was a move that could have impaired the player life long. It was completely uncalled for. Slive has bigger fish to fry though, gotta make sure he censors those coaches around the SEC rather than actually protecting the athletes themselves.

My thoughts exactly. The SEC really has its priorities in order....

Ha!

Yes, but for different reasons. You guys got targeted for so long because of Fulmer and it got to the point it was just easy.

Us now because people are sick of UF. Can't blame them, really. Same thing happened to USC, Notre Dame, Miami, all over time.

USC is still getting all kinds of good press. The only really negative story I can recall with them was the Reggie Bush scandal.

This thug should have been suppended for the season instead of 1-half game against powerhouse Vandy but Oscar Meyer will give him a raise in pay, He want be missed, Like Florida`s team he is overatted! Slizze is to busy kissing Foley and Myers azz to do anything!!! WHAT A JOKE!!!

Meyer goes soft on Spikes with half-game suspension (UPDATED)

Urban Meyer just took, "Stand by your man," a little too far.

Urban Meyer just took, "Stand by your man," a little too far.

(Folks, just did a write-thru — old newspaper term — for the morning AJC. Since it includes everything previously posted here, with updated comments from Urban Meyer and Mike Golic, and SEC’s decision to do nothing, I figured I would just post it here to replace the previous blog. Thanks, JS)

Florida coach Urban Meyer’s apparent policy on eye-gouging is now clear. Only a successful blinding or maiming can result in a full-game suspension.

Meyer suspended Brandon Spikes for only the first half of the Gators’ next game against Vanderbilt for eye-gouging Georgia running back Washaun Ealey.

I’m not sure if missing one half of a Vanderbilt game really qualifies as discipline. But apparently SEC commissioner Mike Slive didn’t want to get in Meyer’s way on this one. I guess Slive only worries about the real serious issues: sound bites about referees, not trivial matters like jamming fingers into eyeballs.

What happened Saturday certainly did not affect the outcome of Georgia’s 41-17 loss to Florida. The Bulldogs themselves have devolved into one of the nation’s most-penalized and least-disciplined teams. Meyer felt compelled to say the linebacker was retaliating for earlier incidents that resulted in him having his helmet knocked off and being poked in the eye (he said).

But Spikes’ act was on another level.

“I don’t condone that,” Meyer told reporters in Florida. “I understand what goes on on the football [field], but there’s no place for that. We’re going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I spoke with him. That’s not who he is. That’s not who we are. He got caught up in emotion.”

Ealey was not available for comment Monday. It was a day off for Georgia players (the NCAA mandates one day off per week for players). Coach Mark Richt declined comment on the incident Sunday night.

But that didn’t stop this from snowballing into a national story Monday. The strongest comments came from Mike Golic, co-host of ESPN’s morning, “Mike and Mike” radio show. Golic has some credibility. He was a defensive lineman at Notre Dame and an eight-year NFL veteran. He has been at the bottom of a few of these piles. So what does it mean when he calls this, “one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life”?

And what does it mean when he says it was worse than when Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State’s Byron Hout in the season opener? (Blount initially was suspended for the full season by Oregon. But several weeks later the school announced a tentative reinstatement, and he may return this week against Stanford.)

“You can clearly see Brandon Spikes’ fingers go into the facemask of the running back for Georgia, and, I don’t mean just go in there — go in there and twist around,” Golic said. “It is a bad looking eye-gouge. And I know this guy is a tough player and I know he hits and I know he’s considered one of the best linebackers. But that’s one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life. Ever. Ever! To be that good of a player and have to do that – stick your fingers in a facemask and try to blind a guy, eye-gouge him, is pathetic, Brandon! Pathetic, that you would do it!

“There needs to be some disciplinary action. Everybody wants to talk about LeGarrette Blount from Oregon for punching that kid. I’ll tell you what. I’ll take the punch over this garbage. Any day of the week. Any day of the week over that garbage on the field of sticking your fingers in somebody’s facemask and trying to blind him. Stick your fingers in their eye? Are you kidding me…?”

Golic later said: “What a horrible move that is. What a classless, unsportsmanlike move that is.”

I will take Golic's opinion over a couple of the d-bag Gator 2 bit *** boys on this forum 4shore

I guess I think its a little more complicated than that. But it is clear that you (and it would seem just about everyone else here) has simply made up his mind. I obviously am a little more open about it, waiting to hear what might be said about it from others, including Spikes, before I jump to the conclusion you have.

I'm not going to change your mind, you aren't going to close mine.

You should leave on a high note. Your set won't have a better joke than that.

They always start knocking the teams at the top. Keeps people tuned in.

You cannot be serious. Have you not watched a game all year? You can't turn on ANY game without hearing the gospel according to Tebow read from the book of Meyer. You guys are really reaching now in a pathetic attempt to cover your thug's ass. If Rico had done the same exact thing to Tebow, you guys would have formed lynch mobs and the hanging would have been televised live on ESPN and CBS.

If I ever see Slive, I'm sticking my thumb in his eye and calling it a "Florida Handshake".

This happens in piles a lot and happened to me. Honestly it was a scary thing and should be enforced much more harshly than a 1/2 game suspension against Vandy of all teams. I also had my knee twisted alot in piles because I played my senior season with a torn ligament in my knee so I had to wear a big brace. Scary stuff just hard to see. With it being seen it should be much more than half a game.
