The incident occurred after a 1-2 pitch to the Marlins' Paul Lo Duca with two out. Estrada, thinking the pitch was an inning-ending called third strike, started toward the dugout before realizing Eddings called it a ball.
Before the next pitch, tempers flared over an apparent exchange of words between Estrada and Eddings. An incensed Estrada arose from his crouch, turned and confronted Eddings.
"I thought he cursed at Johnny," said manager Bobby Cox, who was ejected moments after Estrada was tossed. "I thought he did all the yelling and did a real bad thing. Johnny didn't yell or anything.
"I went in there [after the game] and apologized to Bobby for getting thrown out in the first inning," Estrada said, "but I can't take that. I can't let an umpire abuse me verbally. I hope people understand I wasn't arguing balls and strikes. He was cursing at me, yelling.
"I'm a 29-year-old grown man. I've got three kids at home. I don't care who you are, I'm not letting you talk to me like that."
