Hope he stays healthy this year. I think another concussion and he will have to hang it up.

Daytona is coming boys

Only a few weeks after the Super Bowl. If that!

Also you have the 24 hours of Daytona. A lot of very pretty cars will be on track.

Jeff Gordon is running for Wayne Taylor Racing. I wish he could run the North American endurance schedule (Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, and Petit) but his broadcasting obligations would interfere with that. I'd also like to see him run Le Mans and while we're talking about it Tony may have an offer to run it this year.

I think it's like two weeks after but we have the shootout and the duels in between the Super Bowl. This season will be fun, I hope. Only interest I had in it this year was the pick em because Jr was out basically the last half of the season.

Troubling trend. I've heard time and time again that the drivers aren't having fun driving anymore because of NASCARs lack of willingness to change things and have gotten to be to much of a business. This is why a bunch of the drivers race in all the other series and different cars

I also think you will see guys who grew up racing leave early too. Essentially doing the same thing from age 8-50 might not be the life they want to live.

I was certainly surprised with the rest of you but whom among us wouldn't want to retire before 40?

ESPN is running with the headline "...he no longer wants to compete."

I can't imagine a racer not wanting to race but maybe he's just had enough.

I've long thought that the schedule is too long and most of these tracks don't need double dates.

It will be interesting to hear his statement tomorrow.

Wait, you wouldn't want to spend two weekends a year in lovely Talladega, Sparta Ky, or Brooklyn Michigan?

...sounds like big changes coming tomorrow.

UPDATE 2: The crux of the changes will focus on dividing each race of the entire season into segments - typically three, multiple sources confirmed. In general, the system will work as follows:

• Teams will know before the season begins how each race will be divided, which will be based on race and track length.

• At the end of each segment during the races, bonus points will be awarded for those drivers running in the Top 10.

• During the segment breaks, there will be coordination between NASCAR and the TV networks to ensure as little on-track action (including pit stops) will be missed as possible.

• At the end of the race, the normal points will be awarded to the finishing order of the race as they have been.

• A driver's total for the event will include the normal race finish points plus any top-10 running bonus points collected in the segments.

• The 10-race Chase for the championship will be conducted in most part as it has, but there is expected to be an opportunity for drivers to earn bonus points during the Chase.

Have they ever looked at the correlation between their TV ratings and their constantly adding gimmicks and wrinkles to something that was once very straightforward? Outside of distributing points from 43-1 I don't know that there's been a change in the last decade that made sense.

Not really... I don't mind the chase. I'd tweak a couple things but I'd keep it.

They mistook the surge of popularity they got as a legit seat at the table with the major sports.

They overplayed their hand and now things have regressed to the mean.

Combine that with the financial state of the country, cost of sponsorships, a gaggle of boring tracks. and the dip all sports have had due to cheap, HQ television... they are scrambling.
