Who were you hoping theyd hire?
None of the names this cycle really excited me to be honest. Pat Shurmur and Frank Reich intrigued me because I really feel we need an offensive mind for Mariota's development. I'm sure Vrabel is a good candidate but his track record isn't long enough for me. I'm starting to think we should have just kept Mularkey for 2018 and start there.

Hard to really know what Vrabel is at this point, but I'm optimistic about this one. Wilks has only been a coordinator for a year and I think he'll be a good HC too; the fact that we took Vrabel over him, and that Vrabel was a finalist in Indy as well, means multiple evaluators I generally trust see promise in him.
As I already posted - I am good with this hire. Both Robinson and Vrabel have the Pats' pedigree as a common denominator. Robinson has watched his work 4 times as a Texans coach the last two years. Agree that they need to make a good OC hire that can develop MM. I would imagine there are a couple guys they both like. I still like the thought of Todd Haley mentoring MM in an offense such as Roethlisberger's had with Brown and Bell as game breakers.
I always like hiring a HC that can take a variable out of the equation on one side of the ball. Vrabel knows today's defenses far better than Mularkey knew today's offenses. Watt only played 5 games this season, yet the Texans were ranked #13 in total D despite being on the field too much after Watson went down.
Big difference. Leinart would have been set up better in Tennessee because of coaches and roster. Way better here than in Arizona. Also, I never claimed he would have been great. I don't deal in Guarantees like others in this thread. He would have been set up to succeed a hell of lot more in Tennessee than in Arizona.
Not to be overly nitpicky, but the Texans were #20 in total D and dead last in scoring defense. Hard to find much of anything to be positive about in their 2017 performance.
Having said that, they were ravaged by injuries and the offense did them no favors, so it's not exactly a deal breaker either.
Strangely enough, my gut tells me this is a good hire. No idea why.
