The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Hard to really know what Vrabel is at this point, but I'm optimistic about this one. Wilks has only been a coordinator for a year and I think he'll be a good HC too; the fact that we took Vrabel over him, and that Vrabel was a finalist in Indy as well, means multiple evaluators I generally trust see promise in him.

Who were you hoping theyd hire?

None of the names this cycle really excited me to be honest. Pat Shurmur and Frank Reich intrigued me because I really feel we need an offensive mind for Mariota's development. I'm sure Vrabel is a good candidate but his track record isn't long enough for me. I'm starting to think we should have just kept Mularkey for 2018 and start there.

Keep Mularkey? No way. You know exactly what you have with him and his offense. Especially since he was not going to make any changes.

If we had kept Mularkey, we would have been keeping Robiskie too. Hard pass.

Not really thrilled with this hire, but I don't hate it, either. I agree his track record is pretty limited, but the man appears to have a pretty good reputation and assumed bright future in both coaching circles and with front offices.

I do wish we would have been a bit more thorough; interviewed a few more candidates and maybe tested the waters in the college ranks before we pulled this trigger.

Maybe we just didn't want to wait around and risk someone else scooping him up. Either way, as long as he keeps the ship on the right path and is willing to surround himself with the right people who can help Marcus reach his full potential, I feel fine riding into the future with Vrabel.

Agreed on Wilks. I wouldn't have minded that one, either.

As I already posted - I am good with this hire. Both Robinson and Vrabel have the Pats' pedigree as a common denominator. Robinson has watched his work 4 times as a Texans coach the last two years. Agree that they need to make a good OC hire that can develop MM. I would imagine there are a couple guys they both like. I still like the thought of Todd Haley mentoring MM in an offense such as Roethlisberger's had with Brown and Bell as game breakers.

I always like hiring a HC that can take a variable out of the equation on one side of the ball. Vrabel knows today's defenses far better than Mularkey knew today's offenses. Watt only played 5 games this season, yet the Texans were ranked #13 in total D despite being on the field too much after Watson went down.

Not to be overly nitpicky, but the Texans were #20 in total D and dead last in scoring defense. Hard to find much of anything to be positive about in their 2017 performance.

Having said that, they were ravaged by injuries and the offense did them no favors, so it's not exactly a deal breaker either.

Strangely enough, my gut tells me this is a good hire. No idea why.

Big difference. Leinart would have been set up better in Tennessee because of coaches and roster. Way better here than in Arizona. Also, I never claimed he would have been great. I don't deal in Guarantees like others in this thread. He would have been set up to succeed a hell of lot more in Tennessee than in Arizona.

Ummm....the cardinals went to the super bowl when he was there. The roster was far better than TN

I later saw the ESPN stats versus the NFL.com stats, which I thought said 13th. Could just be my tired brain. I agree the injuries were awful and I have no real great explanation as to why I think he will be a good HC. My hunch is he learned from some of the best in his experiences and they will hire a strong OC to counter his weakness.

I like the hire. Everything you read ab the guy is positive. Been around coaching and first big job but I think it's a good hire.

Must have killed the interview with offense philosophy and coaching candidates

I’m very happy with the hire, was the guy I wanted all along. Don’t think I’ve seen a guy move up the coaching ranks so fast. His first coaching gig was in 2011. Shows how well respected he is IMO.
