The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

I just hope we can get an OC who will stick around longer than a year (assuming he does well). Have to think the DeFilippos and LaFleurs of the world are on the fast track to getting head coaching gigs themselves. Wish we could find our own Norv Turner or Steve Sarkesian kinda guy. A dude who’s been around and had success but has kinda maxed out his reputation at coordinator. An offensive Dick Lebeau if you will. Would love it if we could lure Gary Kubiak down from his cushy front office job in Denver, but I think that’s a pipe dream.

Not a Sark fan, but I still agree. Norv Turner was my first thought, I wish he were available but he’s a good hire for Carolina.

I don’t understand the love for the hire. Yeah he is young, player friendly, and has actual NFL playing experience, but the Texans defense was horrendous this year. They lost to the colts for crying out loud.

I understand the skepticism, I really do. Part of me is very skeptical as well. I think the widespread optimism is a combination of two things, 1. People trusting Jon Robinson’s judgement, and 2. Literally the fact that it’s not Mike Mularkey.

Not to mention, the dude has risen incredibly fast. I have to assume there is a legitimate reason for that. There are a ton of guys with “connections”, yet very few of them get an NFL coordinator job within their first 6 years of coaching, let alone a head coaching job within their first 7. Apparently the guy has something people want.

I don't mind taking a chance on a head coach, and I don’t mind taking a chance on a coordinator, but I don’t love the idea of taking a chance on both. And hiring Day doesn’t seem like taking a chance as much as just being an unqualified hire.

I'm neither for nor against it. The good thing is he is a Chip Kelly guy (6 years of either playing/coaching the Kelly offense). We've all been clamoring for more of a spread system to make Marcus comfortable. One would hiring Day and implementing more of a Kelly spread offense would make Marcus a lot more comfortable going into next year. Not to mention he spent this past season learning under another spread genius in Meyer.

So knowing that the entire staff is under contract for next year is there anyone on it that you guys think we should retain? The guy with the biggest chance of being kept wold be LeBeau because I think Vrabel wouldn't mind having someone like him stay. The other guy I would like to see kept is Russ Grimm, I still think he is a good offensive line coach.

Yeah Lebeau and Grimm are pretty much it. Maybe Lou Spanos as well. He has a pretty good reputation.

More than anything else, I want whoever we hire as OC to be flexible. Yes, we all want to spread the field and play to Marcus’ strengths, but we also need to be able to go under center and pound the rock when we need to or when it’s working.

From what I have read, that’s what I like most about Day. He adapts to his personnel/situation. He may not be the most accomplished name, but his flexibility alone is a desirable trait that I hope is of as much importance to Vrabel and JRob as it is to me over the duration of this entire hiring process.

I would not be surprised for Vrabel to bring in a new DC, though. New coaches tend to mostly clean house regarding the previous staff.
