The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Make no mistake, I am not calling for his head. 2019 and 2021 were excellent coaching jobs, but the NFL has very short term memory. Also, his hires, particularly offensively, have been underwhelming at best.

Unless Willis or Levis actually pans out, I will be surprised if Vrabel is still here in 2025.

There’s no hire that could’ve made this offense functional. You can’t be one of the worst teams on the oline and at WR, with a middle of league QB, and expect things to workout.

Looks like he threw about the same number as Patrick Mahomes. His 21 stats were solid, 22 less so. But he also had next to nothing around him. Especially in 2022.

You do realize QBs continue to grow and improve after college right?
I do, but when I’ve watched him play I didn’t see anything that made me think he’d be a good pro

Were you under some false illusion that all of our problems could be solved in one offseason? If not, and you see a really good player falls to you, you take him.

You get my point. Build the lines first, then the weapons. Hell, I think you've made the same point ITT. I can see the OL needs significant investment. I guess we can kill Will Levis next season if he can manage his way over Malik.

I’ve never made that point. In the nfl you swing at QB, and if you don’t hit, you keep swinging. That’s first and foremost. Offensive line play is down the list. If we had better WRs and QB play, our offensive line would look far better.

But even with that said, the guy spent a first rounder on an offensive lineman (not the move I would’ve made) and brought in several free agents. There’s only so much you can do in one season. Especially when your roster needs nearly everything (CB, Edge, 4 OL, WR, QB)

Yes, but the results still ultimately fall in Vrabel's lap.

Unless the O-line improves a great deal as the season progresses, it's hard not to see this team finishing somewhere near the gutter.

Today was pathetic, and week 1 wasn't much better for them. And let me reiterate that we've now lost 9 of the last 10 games. Like I said, I am not out on Vrabel yet, but this is getting pretty difficult to defend. There is no reason an offense with the combined experience of Henry, Tannehill, and Hopkins should be this utterly hopeless. Vrabel's been here a hot minute. He is certainly not absolved of some blame.

It’s really easy to defend. Zero talent=poor results

When he’s had average rosters he’s had far above average results

Yeah, I disagree. Bring a rookie QB into a decent protection situation to maximize the roster flexibility while on the rookie contract. You compared Levis with Mahomes, the line situation for the two of them would be drastically different if Levis could find the field. I do agree that if you can protect him some, swinging on QB is a good strategy.

It's hard to imagine that the o line would end up worse this year than it was last year.....

Carthon walked into a dumpster fire and made some moves that just haven't improved the situation. He had to depend on a prior staff's evaluations etc.

He's going to have to get the right people in, both in support staff and on field talent.

The offense should probably be completely turned over in the next few years with a couple of exceptions.

Calm down. Vrabel is a decent coach, but he's not going to make or break the organization. His fate will ultimately be tied to this GM and the most important position in sports (QB). Personally, I don't think it looks too good for him here long term.

Vrabel, if ever fired by Tennessee, would have a head coaching job at another team within 48 hours…..

I don’t ever expect a Vrabel coached team to tank, but this is perfect year for it had we not screwed up the Levi’s pick. Tanking while Tannehill’s deal expires after this year and cap space in general gets favorable would have been very worth it had we drafted a WR / TE where Levi’s was picked.

What does Vrabel need in terms of wins to keep his job? At least finish on the fringes of a playoff spot?

At some point, Carthon is going to want to completely remake this roster and probably want to do it with a new HC.

Why would you want to do it with a new head coach? I don’t understand.

If you're going to rebuild with a bunch of new players, lots of times the new GM will want a different HC who he thinks will mesh well with those players.

I’m aware it’s common in the NFL, but I also think it’s dumb. Unless you think your coach is the problem. For example if Mahomes retired and the chiefs went 3-13, I’d still keep Reid even if it meant he’d be part of a rebuild

Vrabel is not getting canned regardless of the record this year. We go 1-16, he keeps his job because to be frank, there is not one up and comer coach out there that is a better option to deal with a complete blow up and rebuild. Nor would I want any other coach out there to do it over Vrabel because he's shown what he can do when he has a formidable roster.

Really? Andy Reid is 65 and I'm not sure is the guy you'd want for a rebuild. Andy is a phenomenal coach, one of the GOATs, but I'm not sure the guy for a rebuild at this stage in his career.

IMO, if/when the Titans do truly start a rebuild they are going to go in a totally different direction with this roster, namely moving on from the ground and pound running attack. It wouldn't surprise me if they went the young offensive/QB guru route like lots of other teams have.

Didn’t our GM come from one of the most well known ground and pound systems (Alex Gibbs zone /Mike Shanahan zone scheme)?

If we were looking to change coaches and philosophy, I think we would’ve hired a different GM.

Kyle Shanahan is more innovative and creative than his dad. Vrabel is not an offensive coach. FedEx carried him.
