The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Dawn Davenport on 3HL said that Vrabel's contract allowed for him to have final say on what teams he could to be traded to.

Did he do what she charged him to do when she hired him six years ago? What is the current trend line? Was he hiring the best assistants and modifying his system to accomplish it? Nope. He topped out at the AFCCG and headed downward. He could not keep healthy players on the field with his style of play, S&C and players they signed. They could not sign players who could handle the offensive system.

Stop blaming it all on J-Rob. Vrabel gave strong input into who he wanted with players and total input on coaches. He did his best, it did not work out, time to move on. Wish him well in his next gig.

No owner who makes a change is going to come out during the announcement and tell the world their detailed plan. That would be insane. Nobody else needs to know except the people in the building.

I’m shocked they pulled the trigger. I was not nearly as high on Vrabel as others in this thread (and wasn’t particularly quiet about it), but I do believe he’s a decent-good coach, and was kinda hopeful we’d hold onto him and possibly rehire Arthur Smith at OC.

But who knows, maybe it was time. There was an awful lot of smoke for a large portion of the season, and I’m not convinced this wasn’t at least somewhat mutual. I just hope Amy and Ran actually have a plan.

Whoever hires Vrabel will indeed hit a homerun.

No they won’t. Whoever hires him will have landed a coach who feasted on one of the worst divisions in football and was, at least in part, responsible for an epic collapse these past two seasons. He made poor assistant coaching hires. He never addressed his S&C issues, and there were clearly issues there given the amount of injuries his teams consistently experienced. Vrabel is average. There are worse coaches than him, but there are plenty of better ones. Will the Titans hire one of those better than him? Probably not. Was the decision to fire Vrabel the right one? Absolutely.

Vrabel wasn't responsible for drafting Isiah Wilson and Caleb Farley and trading AJ Brown or doling moronic contracts that bogged down the organization to reload the roster... Vrabel had his shortcomings, but to sit here and think that the Robinson Era piss poor roster building / drafting wasn't going to cause long term harm is just revisionist history.......

I feel as you do about Vrabel being fired, but not sure Ran deserves that.

I think Ran was a horrible GM hire. Amy's one big weakness was hiring GM's since she took over. I think Ran is another one... The one thing that gave calm with Ran being hired is that we had a someone perceived as entrenched at Head Coach.....

Why was he a horrible hire? He has a pretty solid track record.

Still don’t see why we are in such a hurry that we couldn’t trade.

I fully support moving on Vrabel. I know a lot of Titans fans like him and think he’s a good coach. I think he’s mediocre.

With that being said, to pull the plug now leads me to believe that it was an emotional decision to fire him based on differences that Adams believes to be irreconcilable (aka, there was an argument and both sides effectively showed the other the middle finger). If it was all job performance related, they would have fired him yesterday or they would be exploring a trade.

Vrabel wasn’t fully responsible for the draft picks, but I think it’s naive to believe the story that he played no part in any of those moves. Obviously he plays no part in the financial piece when it comes to contracts, but I have a hard time buying that he and J-Rob didn’t sit down and talk about roster moves.

I find it hard to believe that Vrabel was all about the Farley pick. He never once came out hyping the guy after he was picked. It was well he needs to get into camp so we can see him. The Isiah Wilson i assume everyone was onboard with and he was an idiot after the fact. That pick falls on JR. Farley even more so.

Trading AJ was the beginning of the end here for Vrabel. Even then, he was 1 game away from going back to the playoffs last year and was in 7 one score games this year.

*crazy conspiracy theory*
The Titans org probably wanted Vrabel to tank that Jags game.

If the Chargers would have won and the Titans lost to the Jags last Sunday, the Titans would have had the 4th round pick In the draft.

Yup. The Miami and Jax wins screwed the org big time.

Probably didn't help things for Vrabel.

Carthon said in his press conference just now that he doesn't believe in tanking and his goal is to win football games because that is ultimately what he is judged on. And for the record it's beyond stupid to say "if the Chargers would have won" because they didn't win. They lost. And the actual reality is losing the Jags game only would have moved us up 1 pick.
