The Official Zone Severe Weather Thread

What is the reasoning? Is it still pushing a bigger surge?

Yes to the surge. In addition, a 5 to 3 is usually a much larger hurricane than a 1 to a 3 since it has likely undergone multiple eyewall replacements (weakens the storm but makes it larger).

Wind matter but size matters too. Katrina was only a 3 when it hit NOLA but it was a large storm...

I'm in a safe place Miss Vette. I'm 120 miles South of Tampa and I'm well prepared. Will be even more prepared tomorrow. I'll be dug in like a tick.
Oh that is good to know, because this is "The Big One", and I hope that all of your family is safe too. I have two friends in Florida, one has a 5th wheel in Zephyrhills and he came to Tennessee because of Milton, and the other friend is in Brooksville and he is not leaving and his Mother and sister also live there. I will have to pray that they stay safe.

My dad has a place on Sanibel but he's in Tennessee now so he's good. Hope your friend get through with no issues.

You're right, this has the potential to be the big one for wherever it makes landfall. Local news was freaking out today so I tuned into TWC. Now in the last hour they're freaking out. I hate it for the Tampa area. This could really be historic.

Andrew was so tightly wound that 150 miles from the center we didn't even get wind. Drained the pool 2 ft and put in 5 gal of chlorine. Didn't get a drop off reason.

People get caught up on the CAT rating, but that's really just wind speed. A CAT 3 (Katrina) can be more devastating than a CAT 5. Size matters*.

Yes, I am afraid that it will be historic too.

Thanks, I appreciate it, but I'm not staying because of nowhere to go. I could go to dad's or my brothers, or a friend in Jupiter. I'm good here.

There's some older church people that aren't in the evacuation zone but they will lose power and possibly water. I like to stay close.

BTW @joevol33 Mrs Foster just lost her 4th child yesterday, another daughter. Cancer. She's turning 91 soon. She's lost 3 daughters and a son. I didn't realize she has/had 9 children. I thought she just had the three daughters.
Man, that poor lady has been through it, I can't imagine. Praying for her, you guys will always be special, I keep that picture on my phone.

Are you in an a or b zone in your new house? I wish you the best man, its gonna get ugly I'm afraid.
We are in Brandon in a non-evac zone. Basically just east of the casino and amphitheater. The blue to the west is not water that is a D evac zone. I figure we'll get the wind and rain. Nothing like the storm surge we would have in our old house. We left for a few storms from there and would have for Helene and this one. But it will het hairy, I'm sure.

Cool, better than being in Tampa. I'm in Ft. Myers about 3 miles West of the river but I'm in a good spot, I personally only expect (hope) some palm fronds in the yard and to lose power.

Stay safe and hope you escape with minimal issues.

You too. Yeah the cops and fire fighters came by the office this afternoon over by TIA (Zone A) and basically told us to GTFO. Office overlooks the Bay over by Courtney Campbell bridge.

True because as a 5 to a 3 it is gathering all that water and energy for what's going to be 2 days as a 5 and bringing it ashore even though the winds are about 20 mph less. If you hadn't seen Tampa General Hospitals "aquawall" give it a look. It has saved our level 1 trauma center that is on Davis Islands from up to 15 foot surge.

One of my favorite people, and ex teacher/mentor is in Tampa..he usually rides these out, kinda wish he wouldn't this time.

I bet if he's in zone A he won't. Zone B he probably won't.

People in Tampa are being informed and understanding what this storm is. I think Helene was enough to get their attention.
