I think the D90 is overpriced for what it does. It's 12.8mp and only shoots 720p video. the canon eos T2i is a beast for around the same price. It's 18mp and will shoot 1080p. The Nikon does have a higher ISO capability, but canons are known to perform with less noise at comparable iso's. The key for you is going to buy a high quality zoom lens. the 70-200 4.0 IS L is the canon I would go with. It's a great lens that is pretty dang fast and works well with tough light conditions for around a grand. If you want to spend serious bucks you could get the 70-200 2.8L but dang, it's not cheap for someone photographing their kids.
Cards Fail, I wouldn't go higher than 4g even if your shooting RAW+JPEGI can attest to the T2i. I purchased it recently and have been really pleased. I am no expert by any means. I just enjoy shooting. The key is to shoot often. Get the biggest memory card you can buy and just experiment with the camera in all modes. Here is one I shot recently on vacation. I love this thread by the way, keep the pics coming.

ok, I'll agree with that. But you can get 800 jpeg images on a 4gb card. Lightroom is great, I suggest downloading totally rad actions. We use adobe bridge to organize.I should clarify. I wasn't suggesting that anyone should store all of their images on the card, just get a big enough one so you can shoot as much as you want each session. I use Lightroom to organize my photos on the mac and have been pleased with it so far.
