The Road To Hoover

Mizzou just won the nightcap of their doubleheader vs. Georgia.

This means we're in a two way tie for 13th, a game behind two teams who own a tiebreaker over us.

That makes tomorrow very close to a must win game (not quite mathematically, but still).

I feel the same way. Getting to Hoover changes nothing with this team IMO.

Do what? They would have at least accomplished something. Making the SEC tourney in which they haven't been able to do lately. That's nothing in your eyes? It is to me even though the season has been disappointing indeed.

It's about measuring progress and sorry to bust your bubble but we have made it to Hoover the past 2 years. Both years we squeaked by the last weekend to just get into the tourney.

If and that's a big if we do make it next weekend it will show nothing has changed in terms of progress and for that I don't think it really matters in terms of this program under CDS

They've squeaked into the SECT the last two seasons and it's expanded by 2 teams. I believe it was pointed out Raliegh's teams probably would have made the SECT at least twice as well.

As I've said, it's better than not making it but IMHO it's really not much of an accomplishment, especially when the goal this year was a regional.

Maybe I should go back & edit my post to read this instead "Making the SEC tourney in which they haven't been able to do much in the past few years". I had also forgot they made it 2 years ago. I was thinking they didn't make it in 2014. That's my mistake but I still think it's a goal for all(players, coaches,& fans) to get in the tourney.

Yes, they need to do better than just make it but it is what it is unless we do make a coaching change or get some top players to come to Knoxville. Senzel is the best overall player we've had since Chris Burke so we're getting there. We just need to get more like Nick but it's hard competing against Vandy for these top players. We have signed some decent in-state talent in recent years but Vandy always gets the out of state top recruits.

Once we go out of state then we have the rest of the SEC schools to compete against that makes it even harder. We really have some talent on this 2016 team. We really do but for whatever reason we've not been able to turn that talent into wins. I think the biggest reason is that we don't have strong starting pitching & only a decent bullpen.

We certainly have the hitters. We have probably 4 position players from this team that will be drafted whenever their time comes. Senzel is probably gone after this season because he's a top 10 draft pick. Santiago at C will be drafted as well. I also give Jordan Rodgers a good chance at being drafted too. The other one is Vincent Jackson. He's probably going somewhere in rounds 2-3 this coming draft.

Plus, Zach Warren & Kyle Serrano our 2 top SP's will certainly go in the draft either when they go early or after their senior seasons. I hate that Kyle Serrano had that injury & it doesn't mess his arm up because he has a chance to be a 1st round pick one day just like Nick Senzel is fixing to be this 2016 draft.

Meh, participation medals.

Can't argue. It was a big deal when only 8 teams from a 12-team conference went to Hoover and a ticket to Hoover was for all intents and purposes also a ticket to the NCAA.

Now that 12 of 14 make it, several teams will go to Hoover but no farther, and it's simply an embarrassment to be one of the two wallflowers that aren't invited to the dance.

Oh, I agree with you guys that just making the SECT isn't good enough each year but it's still getting to play at least one more game. Are we going to go far if we make it? No, but it's at least making the tourney to me.

Something is going on strange with this team. We have quite a bit of talent. Not Vandy type talent but we shouldn't be struggling each year to just make the SECT. We have at least 6 draftable players on this roster. 4 position players & at least 2 SP's.

That shows we have some talent. People want to blame Seranno. I don't know who or what to blame to be honest. We just haven't clicked on both offense & defense.

Losing Kyle Serrano for the season to the arm injury surely didn't help either. He is probably our best SP although some would argue it's Zach Warren. No doubt Senzel has been our best overall player both offensively & defensively.

He's going as a top 10 pick this coming draft in June. I would love to see him 1 more season but he's gone for sure. Most mock drafts have him going #6 overall now to the Oakland A's. Gonna miss watching you play Nick.

Then it seems you agree it's not really an accomplishment.

The first problem is, currently, Tennessee plays in a league right now that has seven different schools that could win the national title and it would not be altogether shocking.

Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Vandy, LSU, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss.

When you are in a league that powerful, being good is going to lose more often than not. You have to be better than "good".

No, it's still an accomplishment to make it. Just need to do more with it.

I agree. I said we have good talent on this team. Not great talent like the other SEC teams you mentioned above. We certainly do have to be great to compete in this conference but the problem is we can't get most of the "top" recruits come to play in Knoxville.

We will probably never see another talent even close to Todd Helton. Other SEC schools might get similar talents as him but not us. We do need to get at least most of the top in-state recruits though over Vandy to get back to having a chance to compete. We just are not going to get top recruits from other states to committ to Knoxville too often.

I'd like to think differently but it's a fact. Vandy & UF can get those but we're out of their league when it comes to getting these top recruits from out of state. So, how much better are we supposed to be/get if we can't get that part done?

Tennessee has some very good talented baseball players each year but we only get a few of them while Vandy grabs most of them. We are just limited on the recruiting trail. I thought Coach Serrano could help with that & he has to some extent but still not enough. We have what we have & can only recruit to a certain level.

Vols have to sweep UGA. This would give them the tie breaker over UGA and allow for Auburn and Mizzou to win one game and Arkansas could win as many as two. With a sweep, the Vols could finish as high as 10th in the SEC. With that being said, they are screwed!

The two losses to Missouri where the Vols blew 8th inning leads were the death knell.

We have to sweep Georgia and Missouri and auburn both have to lose... We have a chance but it's very small

That's not true

Easiest way and most realistic path to making the tourney

Win 2/3 at Georgia
Auburn gets swept by Vandy
Mizzu gets swept by Kentucky

The most unlikely part of that is us winning 2 IMO

Add in Arkansas would have to sweep Mississippi St in that scenario. We have the tie break on Arkansas.

We only need to win two plus have two of the following three events happen:
Arkansas lose at least two.
Mizzou get swept.
Auburn get swept.

The least likely of those events is us winning a series, but we swept Mississippi State on the last weekend last year to sneak into Hoover with the 12th seed. So it could still happen.

I am pulling for sweep just as much as the next guy However MSU was terrible last year. Georgia is a better team. Everything has to play out. I sure hope it does
