The Runner's thread

I checked them out on Amazon. I would love to ahve the 405 that will download the info onto your computer wireless by just walking into your house. I think it was right around 190.00. I hope to get back into running in a few weeks. Not sure I'll pull the triger by then but we'll see.

Anyone else use iPhone app LogYourRunFree? It does a very good job and keeps up with speeds and routes well. Free and does everything I could ask for. Even let's me operate the iPod without leaving the app.

One week into my running routine:
Monday: 3.1 miles
Tuesday: 5 miles
Wednesday: 3.1 miles
Thursday: 5 miles
Friday 3.1 miles
Saturday: Hour 10 which comes out to about 7 miles
Sunday: greatest rest day of my life

Never been a runner. I was a linemen in high school and I am looking to drop weight and my goal is to run a half marathon october. Using New Balance 1012 Motion Control. One week in and I am so sore but I love it. The only thing I don't like is the constant thirst and hunger. Also, this exercise has put my colon to work. Activia ain't got Sh!t on Running.

I'm no fitness guru, but I have to think you'll last longer throwing more off days.

I would agree with BPV. Thats a lot of running right out of the gate.

As for thirst, go to a running store and get belt water bottle or a small one you can hold in your hand.

I thank you for the concern but I haven't been inactive before this. I just never structurally ran. My girlfriend is a cross country runner and I need something to do while she's training, so why not join the club. And I feel great I usually only break once during my runs during the week and twice during the Hour 10. Anyone know of good stretches for thighs and calves?

Girlfriend can hook you up. Might even demo.

OK, so after my great 8 miler on Saturday, I hit a major wall yesterday. Flu-like achiness, malaise, and upset stomach. I thought I was getting sick, but nothing really materialized. Today was a little better, but still no energy for lifting. Honestly, I think I didn't eat right or take in enough fluids after pushing myself on Saturday.

Brainstorming, I think I need to take a water supply with me or maybe even a carb boost. Maybe I needed more after the run. Thoughts?

7, but I ran some serious hills. I will take some water and a gel next time, lys.

to be able to state that you ran X amount of miles, does that mean nonstop miles with no rests or walking?

I use one of these if I'm going to run over 4 miles. Holds 10 oz plus my keys or gels. They make bigger ones and are available at any running store or online by Ultimate Direction or Nathan.

I generally run 98% of the time but if my heart rate gets elevated (like up a steep grade or mountain) then I'll walk for a minute to bring it down. Unless you're an elite runner, walking a bit on long runs and races increases your endurance and actually makes you faster.

If that's true then you can call me Flash.

Just kidding, I understand the benefits of doing it but hadn't heard the training aspect of it to increase speed. Where did you come across that?

I've read it a few times in Triathlon and Running magazines. The thought is the longer you can keep your heart rate below threshold the higher rate of speed you can hold.

For example, lets say I run for 20 minutes and then my hr starts to go past my threshold. If I continue running my hr will stay elevated. I'm on a downward track and will progressively run slower. But if I run for 20 minutes and then walk for a minute, it allows me to recover and then I can run close to my original pace for another 15-20 minutes. The fact that I'm able to keep a faster pace longer offsets the little time I lose walking. Plus your body learns to work at that threshold level for a longer period of time.

On flat courses, I adjust my pace from running to maybe a jog to get my hr lower. On hilly courses, (which is what I mostly run) I use the hills as a break since you don't gain much slowly running up a hill vs. a brisk walk.

On shorter runs I push myself with repeats or fartleks, to increase my threshold.
