The Runner's thread

I've read it a few times in Triathlon and Running magazines. The thought is the longer you can keep your heart rate below threshold the higher rate of speed you can hold.

For example, lets say I run for 20 minutes and then my hr starts to go past my threshold. If I continue running my hr will stay elevated. I'm on a downward track and will progressively run slower. But if I run for 20 minutes and then walk for a minute, it allows me to recover and then I can run close to my original pace for another 15-20 minutes. The fact that I'm able to keep a faster pace longer offsets the little time I lose walking. Plus your body learns to work at that threshold level for a longer period of time.

On flat courses, I adjust my pace from running to maybe a jog to get my hr lower. On hilly courses, (which is what I mostly run) I use the hills as a break since you don't gain much slowly running up a hill vs. a brisk walk.

On shorter runs I push myself with repeats or fartleks, to increase my threshold.

Makes sense. Heart rate too high too long doesn't help. Thanks.

i want to throw out an idea, and hopefully it will be accepted. how would you guys like to start keeping a running count of how many miles we run, collectively, and see how long it will take us, as a group, to get up to 500 miles. so, basically, you post the type of run, how many miles, then post an updated mile count. ie; mile count: 95. we can keep it simple; no treadmills, round down to the nearest .5 mile, and 100 post min. to participate. feedback is welcome.

I like it. I think we can do 500 miles in no time.

I mainly have biked indoors over the past few years but my legs are getting sore from it. I am going to start running a few days to switch things up and use different muscles. Anyone know of a good running shoe? I have slightly flat feet.

I'm down with posting up how far we've run. Sounds fun. I say we set a time period and see how much we run as a group, instead of running X miles. Then after that time period is up, see if we can beat that many miles next go around.

Posted via VolNation Mobilethats a pretty good idea as well. it would be nice, though, to see the mile # get bigger and bigger, even past 500. id say which ever way the next few posters see fit, well go with it and get this thing started. i got 2 miles tonight to toss in the pile.

seems alot of people in this thread swear by Asics. you may do best by going to a runners shop and see whats up there.

Hey guys I posted earlier in this thread about me running in the Knoxville Marathon on April 3rd and wanting to know what y'all thought about new running shoes. Well I still haven't gotten any new shoes, but I need to very soon. But anyway I am doing the Half-Marathon which I guess is a little over 13 miles and I was wondering what kind of training schedule should I be doing. I usually run 3-4 times a week while I'm at college during the week and then a little longer run on Saturdays back home. The race is a little over a month away now so I was just wondering what I should be doing by now if I expect to be able to finish the half-marathon. This will be my first one. I ran 6 miles last Saturday non-stop at a pretty fast pace, but then again that isn't even half of what I need to be ready for. TIA.

Run shorter distances 3-4 days a week and try to up your pace, then on one day during the week up your distance for practice.

Go to coolrunners.com, they have everything you need. you can even set up a training schedule for your races.

id like to go ahead and start the mile count while my run is still fresh enough to count. we can figure out the goal later, i guess. i ran 2 miles last night, on the road. wanted to try for three but long day at work said no way.

Half Marathon Training with Hal Higdon

I used his training programs before. They are ready to follow.

I ran 1.5 miles before the sun came up this morning. It felt great. My first run on the pavement since mid Dec. I had plenty more cardio wise but didn't want to pound the feet too much. Took me just over 14 min.

I didn't get up early enough this morning so I guess I will be running in the rain today...oh well. Planning on kayaking Saturday morning to switch it up a bit with a buddy of mine.....gonna be some cold water.

Thanks Tri. Things really seem to be coming together. I've been increasing my biking and swimming. Depending on how things progress with the running, I might do the sprint tri in May instead of waiting to the end of June. I know I'm gonna have some discomfort to work through but it shouldn't be a big deal.

On a side note, I only got chased by 1 dog. It's scary when it's a black dog charging at you in the dark. You can't really tell how big it is. Luckily it was just an ankle biter.

Upgraded to LogYourRun. It's decent and reasonably accurate. Logs my speed at every point in time and logs all of my elevation change. Let's me overlay the two.

For the mileage log being kept: 4.92 today.

I've been using NB.

Need to upgrade though.

Any high number NB is a solid choice.

Honestly, find any reputable brand with a width/footbed that fits ad have someone make the arch right and you'll have good shoes.
