The Runner's thread

Goldie.. I would recommend going to Fleet Feet in Turkey Creek since you live in Knoxville. You can try on a lot of different shoes and find one that feels good to you. That's where I bought my last two pair of Brooks and my Brooks trail shoes.

That's the best way to do it

Wait, so I what about my fitness? Or will the half speed keep me?

You only dramatically lose fitness if you become a couch potato. Going half speed for a week allows your body to recover while keeping the gains you've made.

I am in the market for a new shoe. Any suggestions? I have been running with a Nike Lunarglide 4 and it has been pretty smooth but a little snug. I need something minimalist and have been looking at this Brooks shoe

Give the shoe finder/advisor tool a whirl on runners world.com. I found it to be very useful. Helped me find a great shoe.

What clothing do you guys wear when you run in the cold? I have a pair of leg warmers and arm warmers I wear when I bike, but the leg warmers tend to just fall down to my ankles. I also tend to overheat pretty quickly.

A long sleeve shirt(not cotton) and a pair of nike pants, gloves and a beanie.

Running tights, shorts, maybe some running pants. Moisture wicking stuff for the top. I don't mind running in the cold down to 18 or so. I actually struggle to dress appropriately for the 45 degree days.

Dress as if it's 10° warmer than what the temp says. Ideally you want to a little chilly when you start your run. After 5-10 minutes your body heat will warm you up.

40° - running pants, under armour long sleeve, moisture wicking hat

35° - add a running t-shirt over top and gloves

30° - tights under the pants, windbreaker/sweatshirt/running jacket depending on how far below 30 it is.

Under Armor compression pants and Nike compression long sleeve shirt. Once I get going it's usually enough to keep me warm and more. You have to invest a little in the clothing but it's well worth it.

I have both Nike and UA compression pants and shirts that work well. I don't like running in loose-fitting pants. Thin UA gloves and a beanie to keep the ears warm.

Even though I'm in the woods and almost no one sees me, I can't bring myself to wear running tights or compression pants.

As a heterosexual male, I agree with this. ALthough I bet my booty would really pop in them.

I could maybe see myself wearing them underneath some baggy, manly gym shorts if I were desperate.

My solution is to just tough it out down to about 35 or 40 degrees. Beyond that, just call it a lazy day and hope it's warmer tomorrow.

I spend my summers in lycra bike clothing. I have no shame.

That's what I can't figure out. I'll throw on my bike shorts and jersey, ride down to the coffee shop, sit inside and have breakfast without a care. But run in the woods in tights, nope.

I'd probably wear running shorts over the tights. I think it mostly has to do with social norms.

I would rock some yoga pants in public if it was socially acceptable. Those are comfortable.

I wear the tights under the shorts because the tights have no pockets.

I got a bit lucky, my first race they gave me a nice shirt made for running in, so now I can rock it whenever I want. But, even when its cold, I wear shorts. I blame years of football and baseball in cold weather.

I don't know what my excuse is. I've bought the tights and I'm not afraid to wear them, but I run in shorts whenever possible. Like I'm about to now. I've worn three layers on top just to be in shorts. I also find gloves worthless for me. I'll rock a beanie if it's below 30, but gloves come off within the first mile.
