The Runner's thread

I started two weeks ago simply to try and lose weight. That is my main goal. I use the machine for 30 mins a day, then go jog/power walk a mile. What do you suggest simply for weight loss purposes?

If you are wanting to lose weight make sure you are eating right and then a mixture of running and elip. When you mix things up it won't get boring as quick and you will be more likely to stick with it. Good luck

Depends. Why are you wanting to use the elliptical?

There are two types of conditioning you need for long-distance running, cardio and musculoskeletal. You're getting the cardio on the elliptical, but not the muskuloskeletal.

When I first started running, my cardio conditioning was well ahead of my legs, and if you're the same, you may be able to get some rest so you don't overdo it on your legs. But don't cut out actual running. If you do, that elliptical is going to do you no good.

I personally hate both treadmills and ellipticals simply because they're boring.

I noticed when running my 5k on Saturday that my cardio is way ahead of my musculoskeletal system. I never got out of breath.

With weight loss, eating is far more important than anything honestly. Saddening, because I love my fried food more than I love the want of a six pack

Diet is important on many levels. I was very strict on my diet for a long time and have gotten away from it and it has affected me.

The elevation, amirite?

That's what I am going to say just so I can blame something besides myself

Right there with you, ran a 1:53 on Sat. My worst half... ran 4 minutes slower than Knoxville just 4 weeks earlier. I consider Knoxville's course a good bit hillier. Not making excuses, just a crappy race on my part.

That's exactly how I feel. Previous year in the rain I ran it in 1 hour 57
year before that
1 hour 46

I thought I had a chance at a PR this time.

4 miles with no music. I always run with it. I'm trying to break away from it.

Music actually motivates me to run. I don't have many chances to listen to an album uninterrupted. I like choosing my music to fit my mood: sometimes reflective, sometimes energizing... Depends on the run.

I can't really explain it. Most of the time I love having it but I think sometimes I rely on it too much. Sometimes I feel like I can't run unless I make a new playlist or something. I don't want it to be that way. I think right now I will alternate.

I just think it takes away from the whole "tuning out" that I would like to accompany my running.

I've never run with it. It follows me over from my bike, since I like to be completely aware of my surroundings.

Yes, I think yesterday was nice because I was able to focus on more of what was around me and it was more peaceful.

There have been many times I have run faster or further because of a good song. Sometimes it also helps keep my pace.

Listening to music helps me focus on my pace. If I run without music, I tend to slow down and my attention starts to wander.

Hm. Interesting.

Was able to run today for the 1st time in 8 days. Bad allergies had me on the sidelines.

3 miles in 25:31. Just that little time off and I could feel it.

Yeah, I definitely need to take some time off, too.

I increased my mileage from 2 to 3 earlier this month. I handled my first few 3 mile runs pretty well, but my run on Monday left me really sore.

Tried to run again today and it just wasn't happening. Felt very sore and tired within the first 5 minutes. I think I need to take a week off.

2 miles @ 7:18 pace. I decided instead of taking a week off I am going to just decrease my distances this week to try and rest my legs a little.

Wow, really good post Thrasher. Impressed. :clapping:

I might run another 5k in the morning if I can bring myself to wake up in time. Free beer and tacos afterward.
