The Runner's thread

6 miles today in 47:57. It's been a goal of mine for a long time to run 6 under 48 so I'm pretty pleased with myself.

Anyone else running the Pilot Fireball this year?

Got sick the first part of June with some nasty stomach bug so I restarted the run at least a mile a day trend Tuesday. So far I've logged 18 miles.

I'm new to running and have a question. I've never ran before but want to get in shape.I was wondering what would be a realistic pace starting out

It really depends on what kind of shape you are in now and what kind of back ground you have. Did you play sports in high school? Have you been active before? Things like that. In all reality it doesn't matter what your pace is. All that matters is that you are out there and running.

If you really what to put a number on it I would say 10-12 minutes per mile

You should be able to sustain a speed, whatever it is, and still be able to talk in 3-4 word phrases/sentences at a time. it doesn't matter how slow you are, just get out there and burn calories.

This. Couch to 5k is a solid program to start running if you've never done it before

Nice. That's insane. Couldn't see running for that distance

There was an article on Runner's World's Facebook about a guy in Utah that had run a 100 mile race every month up through May. He had one planned for this month too I think. I cannot imagine what that's like.

Crazy. I do think it would be cool to see if I could complete one lap at Barkley.

What's even crazier is he had scheduled a 100 mile run without any support. He was going to use a camel back and gas stations to help him get through the run. Said he was planning on eating plenty of Hostess cupcakes and twinkies.

I watched a little bit of that video you posted. I am at work so I couldn't watch it all but is the Barkely that extreme?

That's one of the beautiful things about running...you are always running against yourself and no one knows your pace better than you.

You may run/walk a 14 minute mile to start. If you can improve to a 13:30 mile you are beating yourself which is always a good thing. That is why personal records are big deals with runners.

Also, a big rule of runners is that you don't compare yourself to others. Compare your new self to your old self
