What's even crazier is he had scheduled a 100 mile run without any support. He was going to use a camel back and gas stations to help him get through the run. Said he was planning on eating plenty of Hostess cupcakes and twinkies.
I watched a little bit of that video you posted. I am at work so I couldn't watch it all but is the Barkely that extreme?
It's almost entirely off trail. Every year he picks a new course and the racers have to use map and compass to navigate. The total elevation gain is around 36000 feet which is remarkable given its just south west of Knoxville. The racers only know the day it will start never the time. So they can't plan their nutrition. There are no aid stations or crews to help. It's completely self supported except when you reach the start finish line at the end of each loop. The entire race is designed to break you. Almost no one expects to finish they race solely to see how far they can go before giving up.
